The Avantera is a floor-standing four-way speaker designed by Audio Physic of Germany. Its current generation was announced in November 2022 and is the first version of the model fitted with the company's PowerTrain technology. Five finishes are listed - black, white and anthracite high gloss glass, plus black ebony and rosewood high gloss real wood veneer.

Key specs that matter

Four drivers split the range. The line-up is a 39 mm HHCT III+ tweeter, a 150 mm HHCM SL+ midrange, a 180 mm midwoofer with a double surround, and a 280 mm woofer, also with a double surround, which is mounted inside the cabinet as an invisible subwoofer. Audio Physic rates the frequency range at 27 Hz to 40 kHz, sensitivity at 89 dB and nominal impedance at 4 ohm, and recommends amplifiers of 40 to 250 W. Each cabinet stands 1230 mm tall, 202 mm wide and 425 mm deep, and the maker specifies a floor area of 390 x 570 mm per speaker. Veneered versions weigh 40 kg, glass versions 45 kg.

Engineering and use context

Audio Physic aims for an enclosure that has no influence on reproduction and is shaped to avoid standing waves inside it. It uses sandwich construction with an internal Honeycomb Sandwich Board, a light and rigid material first used in the company's STRUCTURE model. Bracing panels of ceramic foam, which is stiffer than MDF while consisting of 85 percent air, reinforce the cabinet without taking away working air volume from the drivers. The drivers, circuit boards, crossovers and the Vibration Control Terminal are all mechanically decoupled from the enclosure. The HHCT III+ tweeter is selected more tightly than the standard HHCT III and has WBT PlasmaProtect contacts. The HHCM SL+ midrange works without a spider. Metal cones use Ceramic Coated Aluminium Cone technology, a ceramic layer on an aluminium diaphragm, combined with Active Cone Damping against resonances, and the Dual Basket Design uses two separate baskets instead of one. A standard single-wire terminal is fitted, and a bi-wiring or bi-amping terminal can be ordered with a new pair, with retrofitting only on special request.

Pairing

Given the nominal impedance quoted above, the Avantera needs a partner amplifier specified to drive such a load continuously. Audio Physic lists its VCF V Magnetic Plus Speaker Set as the accessory feet for the model.
