The BM Jubilé is a self-powered tower speaker made by Backes & Müller, a German firm based in Saarbrücken. Amplifiers, digital crossover and converters are all built into the cabinet, and the model combines side mounted servo controlled woofers with a front array of midrange drivers and a cylindrical wave tweeter developed with the Fraunhofer institute. It forms the larger half of the Jubilé series, which the slimmer Jubilé Neo completes.

Key specs that matter

Inside each cabinet are two 12-inch woofers controlled by the DMC2.0 sensor system, a front column of eight 6-inch BM midrange units plus a ring radiator loaded by the BM Fraunhofer cylindrical waveguide. The frequency range is 22 Hz to 24,000 Hz. Built-in amplifier power exceeds 3,000 watts for a pair. Input sensitivity is 20 dBu, and the converters use 24-bit Sigma Delta technology at 192 kHz. Each cabinet is 23 cm wide, 145 cm tall and 52 cm deep and weighs 72 kg.

Engineering and use context

The signal is split ahead of the power amplifiers by the in-house FIRTEC processor, so each driver group receives its own amplifier channel and no passive crossover components sit between amplifier and driver. The DMC2.0 system uses a sensor on the woofer to compare the movement of the cone with the input signal and correct deviations, a method Backes & Müller has built its active designs around. The two woofers work inside the cabinet from the side panels, which keeps the front baffle narrow. Eight 6-inch midrange units stacked in a line together with the cylindrical waveguide form a tall line source rather than a single point radiator. Buyers can choose satin matte or high gloss piano lacquer, a ceramic-like white finish, and aluminium details in anodized or polished form.

Pairing

Because the speaker contains its own amplification, the Jubilé works with just a preamplifier, or any player offering adjustable output level. Analogue connection is via balanced XLR, and an AES digital input accepts a digital stream directly, so the internal converters handle the conversion. A processed subwoofer output is provided for adding an external bass unit. Both cabinets draw power from separate wall outlets. In a 20 m2 room the speaker's size and weight call for a firm floor and enough distance from side walls for the lateral woofers.

Alternatives

The Backes & Müller BM Line 35 is another active floorstander of the brand, with four 12-inch side woofers and a 20 cm wide front.
