Part of Burmester's Signature Line, the BC350 is a passive floor-standing speaker made in Berlin and designed as a 3-way bass reflex design with six drivers per cabinet. Its defining feature is a choice between two tunings, selected by switching between discrete crossovers, so the same enclosure can run as a leaner Pure Mode system or as a Live Mode system with every driver in use.

Key specs that matter

The driver complement comprises two 32 cm woofers, two 22 cm midrange drivers with light glass fibre papyrus cones and two Air Motion Transformer tweeters with folded foil diaphragms. In Pure Mode only the front tweeter and one midrange driver play alongside both woofers, the rated impedance is 3 ohm, nominal power handling is 550 W and the response reaches 28 Hz to 23,000 Hz within 3 dB. In Live Mode the second tweeter, which fires upward, joins in, both midrange drivers run in parallel, impedance rises to 4 ohm, handling climbs to 900 W and the lower limit moves to 38 Hz. Sensitivity is 90 dB at 2.83 V and 1 m in both modes. Each speaker measures 420 mm wide, 1,889 mm tall and 1,000 mm deep and it is finished in a silk-matt middle grey called Tineo.

Engineering and use context

A very rigid aluminium frame forms the basis of the enclosure, whose design Burmester refined through FEM calculation, and each driver sits in its own internal chamber. The bass reflex ports are made of porcelain, handcrafted by the Berlin manufactory KPM. Because the two tunings use separate crossover networks rather than a simple level switch, the listener changes which drivers are connected, not just their balance. The upward-firing AMT has its own level control with settings from 0 to 7. The body can be swivelled by up to 15 degrees in either direction, and four height-adjustable feet level it on uneven floors. Connection bridges at the terminal panel allow standard single-wire use or bi-amping. The enclosure is rated to protection class IP20.

Pairing

The low rated load in Pure Mode needs amplification that remains stable with high current, and the high handling in Live Mode leaves room for large power amplifiers. The bi-amping bridges let two stereo amplifiers or four monoblocks power the woofers and the midrange and tweeter section separately.
