The Ultra Evolution Bookshelf is the compact two-way speaker in the SVS Ultra Evolution speaker family, which the company describes as its reference range for stereo and home theater systems. SVS lists it at USD 599.99 per speaker, with a choice of piano gloss black, white piano gloss or a real black oak veneer, and the same line also includes the Ultra Evolution Titan and Pinnacle towers.

A 1 inch diamond coated aluminium dome tweeter works with a 6.5 inch glass fibre composite woofer, with a 1.8 kHz crossover point dividing the two. The shipped pair weighs 18.9 kg. SVS rates the response at 40 Hz to 40 kHz within plus or minus 3 dB, nominal impedance at 6 ohm and sensitivity at 87 dB, measured with 2.83 V at 1 m in full space over 300 Hz to 3 kHz. Recommended amplifier power runs from 20 to 150 watts. Engineering and use context

The curved front baffle sets the tweeter and woofer at different depths so that the effective acoustic centre of each driver ends up equidistant from the listening seat, a method SVS calls time-aligned cabinet geometry. The diamond-like layer is grown on the aluminium dome by vapour deposition to stiffen it. An organic cell lattice diffuser, shaped by FEA with a semi-random pattern taken from cell structures, protects the dome. Its tweeter carries silver tinsel leads. The woofer uses a long-stroke motor and suspension, a precision-cast aluminium alloy basket plus an aluminium former with vents, which SVS uses to keep air from compressing behind the coil when driven hard. A 25 mm driver baffle is combined with 18 mm panels with FEA-optimised bracing, and the edges of the front are chamfered with the drivers mounted flush. Bass loading comes from a rear-facing flared port about 51 mm across, crossover parts are mounted on a board with thick copper traces, and neodymium magnets keep the fabric grille in place.

Pairing

The moderate impedance and the recommended power window fit most integrated amps and surround receivers. Two pairs of gold-plated 5-way terminals make bi-amping and bi-wiring possible, and stick-on elastomer feet are supplied for shelf or stand use.
