The Tor is the bigger of the two Peaks stand mount loudspeakers made by YG Acoustics, a company headquartered in Arvada, Colorado, where more than USD 2 million has been invested in the factory since a 2017 change of ownership. This passive two-way model uses a sealed box and sits above the compact Cairn in the range. The pair costs USD 10,500, and a dedicated Tor stand made of aerospace-grade aluminium in a matching finish adds USD 1,500 per pair. Peaks models were developed with the measurement capabilities and supercomputer models of Cambridge Acoustic Sciences, and the line spans USD 8,500 to USD 25,000 per pair.

Key specs that matter

YG fits a 1 inch ForgeCore dome tweeter and an 18.5 cm (7.25 inch) BilletCore woofer with a cone machined from solid aluminium. Rated response spans 37 Hz to 40 kHz, and sensitivity is 88 dB. The average impedance is 7 ohms, dipping to a minimum of 3.5 ohms. Cabinet height is 42.5 cm, width 23 cm and depth 30 cm, and each speaker weighs 18 kg. The wood veneer comes in balanced oak, flamed rosewood or Datuk ebony, set against a semi-gloss black front.

Engineering and use context

A thick aluminium front baffle is fitted into cabinet walls of thick dense resin fibre, which are curved to exact tolerances in custom presses and tapered so the box narrows toward the top. Internal surfaces are non-parallel, and meta-material absorbers and diffusers tuned for this model sit inside, together with bracing that targets panel resonance. The tweeter has its own sealed compartment. The crossover lives in a separate damped enclosure at the base of the speaker, and its topology aims for phase alignment within plus or minus 5 degrees across one and a half octaves around the transition point. Five-way binding posts sit on the rear of that crossover housing. Enclosure fabrication is contracted to firms in England, Poland and Germany, and the crossover boards are machined by YG itself.

Pairing

YG states that the crossover was optimised for efficiency and broad amplifier compatibility, yet the low minimum impedance still points toward a transistor amplifier that remains stable when the load falls that low. The acoustic suspension alignment makes a subwoofer easy to integrate, and the Descent powered model from the Peaks range was built for this role.

Alternatives

The YG Acoustics Cairn is the smaller Peaks bookshelf speaker, using a 15 cm midbass in a 37 cm tall cabinet weighing 12.5 kg.
