The Cairn is the smallest member of the Peaks line from YG Acoustics of Arvada, Colorado. Peaks is an entry series introduced after the 2022 merger of YG with Cambridge Acoustic Sciences under chief executive Dr. Matthew Webster, and it also includes the Tor, Talus, Ascent and Summit models plus the Descent powered subwoofer. This two-way passive stand mount model is priced at GBP 9,900 or USD 8,500 per pair, with an optional dedicated stand at GBP 1,950 or USD 1,500.
Key specs that matter
A ForgeCore tweeter works with a 15 cm (6 inch) BilletCore midbass whose cone is cut from a solid aircraft-grade aluminium billet, while the tweeter uses a proprietary motor geometry intended to keep distortion low. Rated frequency response runs from 40 Hz to 40 kHz. Sensitivity is 86 dB, average impedance is 8 ohms and the minimum falls to 3.9 ohms. Each cabinet stands 37 cm high, 19.2 cm wide and 26.2 cm deep, and weighs 12.5 kg. Three real-wood veneers are listed - Datuk Ebony, Balanced Oak and Flamed Rosewood.
Engineering and use context
A milled aluminium plate forms the front, meant to suppress structural vibration, and the rest of the box is made of thick dense resin fibre with curved walls, shaped to specification in European woodshops. There is no port - the enclosure is sealed, and internal bracing plus acoustic absorbers are there to suppress cabinet resonance. The crossover follows the DualCoherent 2 approach and is assembled by hand from high-grade parts on boards machined at the YG factory, with its network tuned both for driver integration and for amplifier compatibility. Driver work for the Peaks range drew on the measurement tools and computer models developed at Cambridge Acoustic Sciences, and the tweeter design is used only in this series rather than borrowed from the Reference models. The company is based near Denver, and the Cairn opens the range as its lowest-priced pair.
Pairing
Since it is not very efficient and dips well below its average impedance, the Cairn needs transistor amplification able to supply generous current, not a small valve unit. The sealed box rolls off gently below its rated lower limit, so the Descent subwoofer from the same series is the maker's own route to deeper extension. Placing the speakers on the matching Cairn stand keeps the tweeter at the height the designers intended for a seated listener, and the stand finish matches the cabinet veneer.
Alternatives
The YG Acoustics Tor is the larger Peaks bookshelf model, with an 18.5 cm midbass, 88 dB sensitivity and a 42.5 cm tall sealed cabinet.
