The T101 is the smallest satellite in KEF's T Series, an ultra-slim passive loudspeaker designed to match flat-panel TVs. It can be mounted vertically on a wall, on the supplied desk stands or on optional floor stands, or laid horizontally above or below a TV as a centre channel, and KEF used five of them with the T-2 subwoofer in its T105 system, while the T205 and T305 packages mix in or substitute the larger T301.
Key specs that matter
The T101 is a two-way closed-box design with a rated response of 80 Hz to 30 kHz, a 1.7 kHz crossover and a nominal impedance of 8 ohms. KEF recommends 10 to 100 W of amplifier power and quotes maximum output of 107 dB SPL. Sensitivity at 2.83 V/1 m is 90 dB when wall-mounted and 87 dB on a floor stand. Internal volume is 0.7 litres, and the cabinet measures 330 x 140 x 35 mm (the desk stand adds 30 mm of height), or 140 x 330 x 35 mm in centre orientation, and weighs 1 kg.
Engineering and use context
KEF built the T101 around a 115 mm Twin Layered MF driver only 27 mm deep. Its moulded diaphragm has radial and circumferential stiffening ribs backed by a thin layer of high-modulus material, occupying just 5 mm of depth, and it is held by a Z-Flex surround and a concentric suspension reinforced with a metal loop, which lets the suspension sit around the voice coil instead of behind it. The 25 mm aluminium dome tweeter is larger than the 19 mm size usual in this class and sits behind KEF's Tangerine Waveguide. Its rear radiation is vented down a duct in the magnet system into damping material, enlarging the air volume behind the dome. A low resonance lets it cover a wide band with a simpler crossover. The drivers are designed to brace the cabinet, the terminals are recessed into the enclosure, and the wall brackets add only 2.5 mm to the depth.
Pairing
The T101 is voiced to hand off low frequencies to a subwoofer rather than to maximise its own bass, so it belongs in a 2.1 or multichannel system driven by an AV receiver. The matching T-2 subwoofer uses a 250 mm driver in a closed box with a 250 W Class D amplifier, and the optional aluminium floor stands include KEF's Selecta-mount system, which rebalances output for wall or desktop placement.
Alternatives
For more output KEF offers the T301, a two-and-a-half-way satellite with two 115 mm mid-bass drivers in a 600 mm tall cabinet.
