The Speaker Box 5 E Carbon is a small stand-mount speaker of two-way design made by Pro-Ject Audio Systems. It combines a 1 inch silk dome tweeter with a 5 inch bass and midrange driver whose cone is a fibre glass and carbon composite, and both drivers sit in a non-resonating MDF cabinet that works on the bass reflex principle via an opening in the back panel. Pro-Ject lists six finishes - Satin Golden Yellow, Satin Fir Green, Satin Steel Blue, Satin Black, Satin White and Walnut - so the pair can be chosen to match furniture or wall colour.

Pro-Ject states a frequency response of 65 Hz to 20 kHz. Nominal impedance is 4 ohm and sensitivity is 86 dB at 1 W and 1 m. Pro-Ject recommends amplifier power between 10 and 150 watts per channel, with 10 watts named as the minimum. Each cabinet measures 270 mm high, 165 mm wide and 220 mm deep, and one speaker weighs 4.76 kg. Connection is made through gold-plated banana terminals on the back.

Engineering and use context

The layout is a classic two-way arrangement, so the woofer covers both bass and midrange while the soft dome handles the treble. Using a composite of fibre glass and carbon for the cone is the element that gives this version its Carbon name. Since the reflex opening faces backward, the space behind the enclosure forms part of how the low end is loaded. The MDF box is described by the maker as non-resonating, which is intended to keep the cabinet walls from adding their own output. Pro-Ject describes the frequency response as flat across its rated span. Magnetic grilles come in the box and attach without visible pegs on the front baffle. A wall mount is offered separately, which lets the speaker be used where there is no shelf or stand available, for example in a small study or bedroom of around 20 m2.

With the low impedance and moderate sensitivity, the safer choice is an amplifier whose maker confirms stability with low impedance, and output toward the upper part of the recommended range gives more headroom than a unit near the 10 watt floor. The maker names no specific partner amplifier. Because the binding posts are of the banana type, speaker cables fitted with banana plugs can be connected straight to each cabinet without adapters.
