The Speaker Box 3E is a compact passive two-way design in the Pro-Ject Audio Systems range, intended for desktop monitoring next to a computer or turntable, for secondary rooms, compact stereo systems and home cinema use. It is part of the E generation of Pro-Ject passive speakers, which also includes a Carbon version of the same model with a larger cabinet and a carbon fibre woofer membrane. Both were announced in May 2024 as affordable stand-mounts.

Key specs that matter

Pro-Ject fits a 0.75 inch silk dome tweeter and a 3 inch fibreglass mid and bass driver. Pro-Ject quotes a frequency response of 89 Hz to 20 kHz, a sensitivity of 85 dB at 1 W and 1 m and a nominal impedance of 4 ohm. Recommended amplifier power is 10 to 80 W per channel. The enclosure measures 160 mm high, 106 mm wide and 152 mm deep, and each speaker weighs 1.37 kg. Buyers choose among white, gloss black and walnut veneer.

Engineering and use context

The box walls are MDF, chosen by Pro-Ject for its low resonance, with a bass reflex tuning whose port opens on the rear panel. Because of that rear port, the speakers need a little free space behind them and should not sit tight to a wall or deep inside a closed cabinet. Rear gold-plated binding terminals take banana plugs as well as bare wire. Magnetic grilles are supplied with the speakers and can be removed without tools, leaving no visible fixing holes on the front baffle of the loudspeaker. Wall mount brackets are sold separately, which lets the Speaker Box 3E work as a surround or rear channel in a multichannel system as well as on a desk or shelf. Given the small cone and enclosure volume, the rated low limit means the lowest octaves are left to a separate subwoofer in systems that need full range output.

Pairing

Modest sensitivity and a low rated impedance call for an amplifier that copes comfortably with such loads, and the recommended power window covers most compact integrated amplifiers and small stereo receivers. For desktop use a small amplifier with a built-in DAC keeps the setup simple, and adding a compact subwoofer extends the system below the rated low limit.

The Pro-Ject Speaker Box 5 E steps up to a larger box in the same E series, rated from roughly 68 Hz and for amplifiers of 10 to 140 W, with a 1 inch silk dome tweeter and a 5 inch fibreglass driver.
