The SCM12 Pro is a compact passive two-way nearfield monitor from ATC, the British manufacturer known for designing and hand-building its own drive units. It is the most affordable monitor in ATC's professional line, intended for critical nearfield work in control rooms and for LCR and surround monitoring in small to medium-sized rooms, and it is equally at home in a domestic two-channel system.

Key specs that matter

The drivers are ATC's own - a 150mm SB50-150CLD bass/midrange unit with a 45mm voice coil and a 25mm SH25-76 dual-suspension soft dome tweeter, crossing over at 2.2kHz. Response is flat within +/-2dB from 80Hz to 16kHz, with -6dB points at 56Hz and 22kHz in free space. Nominal impedance is 8 ohms, recommended amplification is 75 to 300W, and maximum continuous SPL is 108dB per pair at 1m. Each cabinet measures 400 x 238 x 235mm and weighs 11kg.

Engineering and use context

The bass/midrange driver uses ATC's Constrained Layer Damping technology, a multi-layer composite cone with a central damping layer that suppresses cone break-up. This lowers harmonic distortion in the midrange, improves frequency-response linearity and narrows off-axis behaviour so the driver disperses like a smaller unit. Its motor is built with a large magnet assembly and a hand-wound voice coil of edge-wound flat OFHC copper ribbon running in a precision gap, with front and rear venting to reduce airflow noise and raise power handling. The SH25-76 tweeter shares technology with ATC's well-known soft dome midrange unit - its dual suspension controls rocking modes of the diaphragm and keeps the voice coil moving pistonically without ferrofluid, which can dry out and change high-frequency behaviour over the years. Dispersion is +/-80 degrees horizontally and +/-10 degrees vertically, which suits a desk or console where listening height is fixed. ATC backs the monitor with a six-year warranty.

Pairing

The bi-wire terminal block accepts 4mm plugs and allows the bass/midrange and tweeter sections to be wired or amplified separately. ATC positions its own P1 Pro 150W power amplifier as the natural partner, but any clean amplifier within the recommended range suits the load. In a home system, rigid stands and a subwoofer below the lower -6dB point extend its range.
