The SCM100ASL is a three-way active loudspeaker from ATC, the British company that designs and builds its own drive units and amplifiers. It sits between the SCM50ASL and the SCM150ASL in ATC's classic domestic range, sharing the smaller model's midrange driver but using a 12-inch bass unit in a larger cabinet for bigger rooms. It is supplied as a pair with matching stands and fabric-wrapped grilles, and is also available in passive form as the SCM100SL.

Key specs that matter

Every cabinet pairs a 25mm SH25-76S soft-dome tweeter, a 75mm SM75-150S soft-dome midrange and a 314mm SB75-314SL bass driver with Super Linear Magnet technology. Crossover points are 380Hz and 3.5kHz. Frequency response is flat within +/-2dB from 65Hz to 17kHz, with -6dB points at 32Hz and 22kHz, and left-right matching is within +/-0.5dB. Built-in amplification totals 350W per speaker - 200W for the bass, 100W for the midrange and 50W for the tweeter. Maximum continuous SPL is 115dB at 1m. Coherent dispersion covers 160 degrees in the horizontal plane and 20 degrees vertically. The balanced XLR input has 1V sensitivity and over 10 kilohms impedance. Each cabinet measures about 83.4 x 40 x 58.5cm.

Engineering and use context

The 75mm soft-dome midrange is the centrepiece of the design. It covers the whole middle band on its own, so voices and most instruments are reproduced by one driver rather than being split between a bass unit and tweeter. In the bass driver, ATC's Super Linear Magnet technology uses a special low-loss magnetic material in the motor to reduce the hysteresis distortion that conventional steel pole pieces introduce. Each driver has its own dedicated, individually matched MOSFET amplifier, and the active crossover filters the signal before amplification using fourth-order slopes, so there are no large passive crossover components between amplifier and driver. The input stage is electronically balanced with high common-mode rejection. Protection includes an LDR circuit for the tweeter and active FET protection for the amplifiers. Recent revisions brought an upgraded tweeter and a redesigned port profile. Each speaker draws 90W at idle, and needs its own mains connection.

Pairing

The SCM100ASL needs a preamplifier, DAC or streamer with a variable balanced output, since it has no volume control of its own, and a fixed-level source must never be connected directly. A balanced XLR cable runs to each speaker. It suits medium to large rooms, and the stands supplied set the correct height.

Alternatives

ATC's own SCM50ASL uses the same midrange and amplifier configuration with a smaller bass driver and cabinet for more modest rooms.
