The SC-CX700 is a powered stereo pair that marks the entry of Technics into wireless active speakers. A primary speaker holds the network streaming, inputs and control electronics, while a secondary speaker receives its signal from it, so a turntable, a TV optical feed or a phone can play without any separate amplifier. The US list price is USD 3,499.99 per pair, and the UK price is GBP 2,399.
Key specs that matter
Both enclosures use bass-reflex loading through a front-facing port, and each carries a single two-way coaxial driver that places a 1.9 cm ring tweeter at the centre of a 15 cm cone. Two digital amplifiers sit in every speaker - 60 W for the cone and 40 W for the tweeter - which gives 200 W for the pair. The primary unit measures 201 x 313 x 276 mm and weighs 9.1 kg, the secondary 201 x 313 x 272 mm and 8.9 kg. PCM playback reaches 32 bit and 384 kHz for WAV, FLAC, AIFF and ALAC, and DSD is accepted up to DSD256.
Engineering and use context
Technics names the coaxial unit Phase Precision Driver 4, built with a lightweight ring tweeter so that both frequency ranges leave the baffle from a single point. The JENO Engine processes the digital chain to cut jitter and noise, and Model Based Diaphragm Control works to lower harmonic distortion in the drivers. Acoustic Solitude Construction separates the amplifier assembly from the speaker structure to keep vibration away from the electronics. The two speakers can talk wirelessly at up to 24 bit and 96 kHz, or through a cable that carries 24 bit and 192 kHz. Three sides of each cabinet are wrapped in Dinamica, a microfibre with a suede-like surface, offered in terracotta brown, silky grey and charcoal black. Buttons on the top panel and a supplied remote handle control alongside the Technics app.
Pairing
Wired sources connect through an RCA phono input for moving-magnet cartridges, a 3.5 mm analogue input, an optical input and a USB-C port that turns the pair into a computer DAC, with Ethernet as an option to dual-band Wi-Fi 6. Streaming covers Spotify Connect, TIDAL, Qobuz, Amazon Music HD, Deezer and internet radio, plus AirPlay, Google Cast, Roon Ready and Bluetooth with SBC and AAC codecs. A subwoofer pre-out lets a powered sub be added below the coaxial drivers.
Alternatives
The Technics SB-C600 is a passive two-way coaxial bookshelf speaker from the same maker, designed to partner the SA-C600 network CD receiver.
