The SB-C600-K is a compact stand-mount design from Technics with passive two-way crossover, sold as a pair in a matte black finish at a US price of USD 1,499.99. Its defining feature is a coaxial driver, where a 25 mm dome tweeter is placed at the centre of a 15 cm cone woofer, so both sections of the frequency range leave the baffle from one point.

Key specs that matter

Technics rates the range as 40 Hz to 100 kHz at the -10 dB points, and the division between the two units is set at 2 kHz. Nominal impedance is 4 ohm. Sensitivity is given as 83 dB at 2.83 V and 1 m, which corresponds to 80 dB for 1 W at 1 m. Input power is 60 W rated and 120 W maximum, and the maker recommends amplifiers delivering between 40 and 120 W. Each cabinet measures about 178 x 292 x 258 mm including grille and terminals and weighs roughly 6.4 kg. Low-frequency loading uses a bass reflex port.

Engineering and use context

According to Technics, the coaxial arrangement is intended to give clear localisation of instruments and voices across a full-scale stage, because both units share one acoustic axis. A Linear Phase Plug of original shape is placed on the tweeter diaphragm to align the phases of the two outputs. The woofer uses what the company calls a Smooth Flow Diaphragm, a cone with a shallow profile and a smooth edge shape, chosen to keep reflections of the tweeter output to a minimum. The bass port is also branded Smooth Flow, and its shape was developed with an airflow control method borrowed from aircraft wing design, aiming at low-frequency output with minimal port noise. The baffle that carries the driver follows a low-resonance, high-rigidity design, and a balanced driver mounting architecture is used to suppress unwanted vibration in the cabinet. Inside, the crossover network is built with polypropylene film capacitors and OFC wiring. The binding posts are made of brass, and two speaker cables come in the box.

Pairing

A low impedance combined with a modest per-watt rating means the SB-C600-K needs amplification that handles a low-impedance load and delivers current comfortably within the power window that Technics recommends. The supplied speaker cables allow a basic connection out of the box, and the single pair of brass terminals on each cabinet takes a standard run of cable from a stereo amplifier, an integrated streaming amplifier or an AV receiver.

Alternatives

The Technics SB-C700 is another bookshelf model from the same company built around a coaxial driver.
