The S-10N is a compact stand-mount from Radiotehnika, the brand that takes its name from the Latvian company whose S-series speakers were widely known across the former Soviet Union. It is the smaller sibling of the S-20N and is designed for compact systems on a desk, a shelf or next to a television, working with most modern amplifiers. An active version, the S-10NA, adds a built-in 2 x 30 W amplifier.

Key specs that matter

Its 20 mm silk dome tweeter has a neodymium motor, ferrofluid cooling and a waveguide, working with a 108 mm mid/bass with a Polyglass cone and butyl surround. Frequency response is 62 Hz to 30 kHz (+/-3 dB), sensitivity is 86 dB and impedance is 4 ohms. Recommended amplifier power is 10 W to 60 W. The cabinet measures 140 mm wide, 250 mm high and 232 mm deep.

Engineering and use context

The Polyglass cone uses a cellulose base with a coating, combining the damping of paper with added stiffness. The ferrofluid in the tweeter's voice coil gap conducts heat away from the coil and damps its resonance. The tweeter sits in a waveguide, which controls its dispersion and helps match it to the mid/bass. The crossover is second order. The cabinet is MDF with rounded edges and a vinyl wood-effect finish, and it is filled generously with damping material, with internal cables secured against vibration. The bass reflex port is on the rear and measures 42 mm across. Foam plugs are supplied in the ports, and they can be left in place to reduce bass output when the speakers stand in corners or near walls, where boundary gain would otherwise boost the low end. In normal use on stands or a desk they can be removed. The front panel is split, with the drivers behind a removable cloth grille and a lower section carrying the model name next to a frequency response graph, a design reference to classic Radiotehnika speakers. Adhesive rubber feet are included. The tweeter motor has sealing gaskets, while the mid/bass has a ferrite motor, and the crossover components are mechanically secured. Finish options include black ash. The S-10N is sold as a pair and launched at RUB 22,990, against RUB 29,990 for the active S-10NA.

Pairing

Compact integrated amplifiers rated for low-impedance loads are the natural match, and a small room does not call for high power. The S-10N works best in rooms of 8 to 15 m2 or at a desk.
