The R 1 Signature is the entry version of the smallest model in the R series from Audiovector, a Danish loudspeaker maker that builds its drivers in-house. It is a rear-ported two-way monitor intended for a stand, and the current R 1 range comprises just two trims - this one with a soft dome tweeter and the Arreté with an air motion transformer. The pair has been priced at GBP 3,190, and the speaker is hand made in Denmark.

Key specs that matter

The R Evotech soft dome handles treble, developed and made by Audiovector, and one 6.5 inch carbon cone covers the lower and middle bands, with the two joined by a crossover at 3,100 Hz. The quoted response runs from 42 Hz to 28,000 Hz measured in room, sensitivity is 87 dB per watt at 1 m, and nominal impedance is 8 ohm. Power handling is 160 W. External size is 37 cm in height, 19.6 cm in width and 29 cm in depth. The four standard finishes are matte veneers in Black Ash, African Rosewood and Italian Walnut plus a White Silk paint, with custom colours painted in Denmark offered from GBP 800.

Engineering and use context

Because the side walls curve into a teardrop and never run parallel, internal standing waves have less room to build up, and the narrow laminated front panel keeps edge diffraction low. Audiovector assembles the woofer by hand with an aramid composite membrane driven by titanium technology coils. Nanopore damping, internal shock absorbers and a carbon terminal plate complete the cabinet, and the filter uses the DFF crossover layout. The Signature also carries the maker's named concepts for low compression and no energy storage. Under the Individual Upgrade Concept an owner can later have the pair brought up to a higher trim, which in the R series means a change to an AMT tweeter and, at Arreté level, the Freedom Grounding network that this version lacks.

Pairing

The R 1 Signature suits integrated amplifiers and power amps that deliver clean output into its nominal load, from modest valve units to larger transistor designs within the rated handling. Stands are not included in the box, which contains the speakers and black cloth grilles, so a rigid pair of stands of suitable height must be sourced separately.

Alternatives

The Audiovector R 1 Arreté shares the same cabinet but moves to the R AMT Arreté tweeter, a 2,900 Hz crossover and a 38 Hz lower limit.
