The R 1 Arreté is the upper of two versions of the R 1, the R range's compact speaker for stand mounting made by Audiovector of Skovlunde, Denmark. The R 1 is sold as a Signature and as an Arreté, and the two differ in the concepts and technologies each uses, with the choice of tweeter as one of the main distinguishing points. Audiovector calls the Arreté AMT its finest and most sophisticated tweeter.

Key specs that matter

The R 1 Arreté works as a passive two-way speaker, loaded by a rear-ported bass reflex enclosure. A 6.5 inch carbon bass and midrange driver hands over to the R AMT Arreté tweeter at 2,900 Hz. Audiovector rates the frequency response at 38 Hz to 53 kHz, sensitivity at 87 dB per watt at 1 m and impedance at 8 ohms. Power handling is given as 200 W. The cabinet measures 37 cm high, 19.6 cm wide and 29 cm deep. The standard finishes are matte, in White Silk, Italian Walnut, Black Ash or African Rosewood veneer, custom piano colours painted in Denmark can be ordered, and the black cloth grille is supplied while stands are extra.

Engineering and use context

Audiovector gives the enclosure a non-parallel teardrop shape intended to minimise internal standing waves, and it borrows concepts from the larger R 6 and R 3. The mid/bass drivers are hand assembled and use Aramid Composite membranes, and the front baffle is kept narrow to keep diffraction distortion low. Titanium technology voice coils, DFF crossover technology, laminated baffles, Nanopore damping material, a carbon terminal plate and internal shock absorbers all appear in the list for the Arreté. Only Arreté models carry Audiovector Freedom, a grounding system aimed at movement induced distortion between drive units. Currents flowing between the driver chassis are filtered by a separate crossover and sent to earth. Another item reserved for the Arreté versions is NCS, or Natural Crystal Structure, in which components are frozen to -238 degrees C so that copper molecules realign and resistance drops.

Pairing

To use the Freedom feature, the speaker needs a connection to an earthed wall socket or a grounded mains distribution unit, and Audiovector offers its own Freedom Grounding Cable for this. The brand also lists a dedicated Audiovector Stand among its accessories.

Alternatives

The R 1 Signature shares this cabinet but uses an R Evotech soft dome tweeter, crossing over at 3,100 Hz with a range of 42 Hz to 28 kHz.
