The TAD-ME1TX, also called the Micro Evolution One TX, is the smaller of the bookshelf speakers in the Evolution series made in Japan by TAD Laboratories. This three-way ported speaker is built around the concentric CST driver that TAD also uses in its larger speakers, and it replaces the earlier ME1.

Key specs that matter

A 16 cm woofer handles the bass, while a coaxial unit places a 2.5 cm beryllium semi-dome tweeter inside a 9 cm magnesium cone midrange. Crossover points sit at 420 Hz and 2.5 kHz. TAD quotes a response of 36 Hz to 60 kHz, a sensitivity of 85 dB at 2.83 volts and 1 metre, a rated impedance of 4 ohm and a maximum input of 150 W. The cabinet measures 254 mm wide, 411 mm high and 402 mm deep, and each speaker weighs 21 kg. Two finishes are offered, black and silver white. The Evolution series it belongs to also covers the TAD-E1TX and TAD-GE1 floorstanders.

Engineering and use context

The CST driver, short for Coherent Source Transducer, handles the whole range above the woofer, so the midrange and tweeter act as one point source with controlled directivity. The beryllium tweeter diaphragm is made with a vapour deposition technique developed by TAD, chosen because the material is light yet rigid. The woofer uses a Multi-layered Aramid Composite Cone diaphragm, known by the abbreviation MACC. The enclosure follows the SILENT principle, short for Structurally Inert Laminated Enclosure Technology, pairing birch plywood braces with high-loss MDF panels, and 5 mm steel plates are fitted to the sides. Bass reflex loading uses a bidirectional Aero-Dynamic Slot, a pair of slit-shaped ports in the side panels with flared openings at the front and rear that TAD says reduce noise and standing waves. A limited edition version is listed under the code TAD-ME1TX-G.

Pairing

TAD offers a dedicated stand for this model, the TAD-ST3TX, in K and SW versions to match the two finishes. Each stand weighs 16 kg and has a slanted design intended to tilt the speaker for acoustic reasons. The box also contains a woofer grille, short cables, non-slip pads and a cleaning cloth, with the owner's manual. For amplification, TAD's own Evolution electronics range lists integrated and power amplifiers alongside the speakers.

Alternatives

For a larger stand-mount in the same Evolution series, the TAD-CE1TX is a three-way bookshelf system with an 18 cm woofer and a response to 100 kHz.
