The L/R X is an active streaming stand-mount speaker pair from Cambridge Audio, the London-based company, and it is the top model of the L/R series, the brand's first active stereo speaker systems, shown at CES 2026. It was designed by Ged Martin and went on sale in summer 2026 at GBP 1,799, USD 2,299 and EUR 1,999 per pair, or GBP 1,899, USD 2,399 and EUR 2,099 in Real Walnut. The series also includes the ultra-compact L/R S.
Key specs that matter
Every cabinet follows a 2.5-way layout with a 28 mm torus-chambered tweeter with a dual-radius aluminium dome and a 5 inch woofer on the front, a second 5 inch woofer in the base and two 6 inch force-cancelling passive radiators, one on each side, tuned to 38 Hz. Class D amplification delivers 400 W per speaker, 800 W for the pair. Frequency response is 35 Hz to 24 kHz at ±3 dB. Inputs are HDMI eARC, a moving-magnet phono stage, USB-C audio, USB-A media, optical and RCA auxiliary, with an RCA subwoofer output. Network connection is dual-band Wi-Fi 5 or 10/100 Ethernet, and Bluetooth supports SBC and AAC. Each speaker measures 200 x 330 x 260 mm and weighs 10.4 kg. Finishes are black, white, blue, green, orange and Real Walnut.
Engineering and use context
A 64-bit processing pipeline handles the digital crossover, so the signal is divided between the drivers before amplification rather than by passive components after it. In the 2.5-way layout the base woofer works only in the bass, while the front woofer covers bass and midrange. Mounting the passive radiators on opposite sides lets their movements cancel the forces on the cabinet, so the box itself moves less. DynamEQ, a 7-band equaliser with Normal, Movie and Voice presets and speaker protection are built in. Streaming runs on StreamMagic Gen 4, covering Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz Connect, Amazon Music and internet radio, plus Roon Ready, AirPlay 2, Google Cast and UPnP, and formats up to DSD256. The speakers are linked by a USB-C cable, 5 m long in the box, or wirelessly by WiSA HT at 24 bit and 96 kHz. A Bluetooth LE remote and the StreamMagic app control the system, and the floating base carries dimmable LED underlighting.
Pairing
A turntable, a television and a powered subwoofer connect directly, so the pair forms a complete system without other electronics. Stands or a sturdy shelf are needed, with the base woofer given free space below it.
Alternatives
The Cambridge Audio L/R M is the smaller pair in the same series, with 150 W per speaker.
