The Neumann KH 310 II is a DSP-driven three-way studio monitor for nearfield listening, built around a sealed cabinet, the second generation of the KH 310. It keeps the closed acoustic principle of the earlier version and adds DSP processing with support for the MA 1 automatic monitor alignment system. Neumann sells it as a stereo pair or as separate left and right versions, since the driver layout is mirror-imaged.
Key specs that matter
A 210 mm ELFF woofer, built for low distortion at high excursion, handles the bottom octaves, the midrange is a 75 mm soft dome with magnetic shielding, and a 25 mm tweeter sits behind a protective grille. Each driver has its own amplifier - 185 W, 125 W and 125 W respectively at 0.1% THD+N, or 300 W, 160 W and 125 W at 10% THD+N. Frequency response is 33 Hz to 21 kHz within 3 dB and 29 Hz to 21 kHz within 6 dB, with linearity of 0.6 dB between 100 Hz and 10 kHz. Maximum level reaches 121.4 dB SPL at 1 m in half-space and 115.4 dB in full space at 3% THD, and self-noise stays below 20 dB(A). The cabinet is 253 mm high, 383 mm wide and 292 mm deep, with a weight of 13 kg.
Engineering and use context
Crossover points sit at 700 Hz and 1,700 Hz with 24 dB per octave slopes. Processing runs at 32-bit audio resolution with 64-bit double-precision math, and a linear-phase FIR filter corrects the response between 60 Hz and 18 kHz. Separate soft-clip and thermal limiters guard each driver. The front is a composite polycarbonate part set into a wooden sleeve, with an aluminium panel, finished in metallic anthracite at the front and black at the back. The horizontal cabinet has two M8 threaded inserts for mounting hardware. Inputs are an electronically balanced XLR with more than 12 kohm impedance and an AES3id digital connection on 75 ohm BNC, with a digital loop-through output. The digital input accepts 32 to 200 kHz and processes internally at 48 kHz. Latency is 2.6 ms via the analogue input and 4.7 ms via AES3id. Power draw is under 300 mW in standby, 26 W at idle and up to 320 W at full output, and the monitor drops to standby after 20 minutes without a signal by default.
Pairing
With built-in amplification the KH 310 II can be fed straight from an interface, controller or preamp with balanced XLR sockets, or a digital feed over AES3id. The BNC output lets several monitors share one digital chain. The package contains four mains leads for EU/KR, UK, US and CN sockets, plus self-adhesive feet.
Alternatives
The Neumann KH 350 is a larger three-way active monitor with a vented cabinet and deeper bass extension.
