The Kawero! Chiara is a two-way passive loudspeaker from Kaiser Acoustics of Germany, sold under the Kawero! name alongside the Classic, Vivace, Grande, Furioso mini, Minal and Colibri. Although it stands 1160 mm tall, it uses a single bass-midrange cone and a tweeter, with a passive radiator on the rear handling the lowest octaves. Each cabinet weighs 34 kg.

Key specs that matter

Kaiser quotes a bandwidth of 40 Hz to 30 kHz within 3 dB and a sensitivity of 87 dB at 2.83 V. Nominal impedance is 4 ohm, and the maker recommends 150 W of amplifier power. The crossover point sits at 3100 Hz. Width is 295 mm and depth 470 mm. Connection is single-wired, with one pair of terminals per speaker.

Engineering and use context

Its 150 mm bass-midrange driver is a custom paper and carbon sandwich cone made for Kaiser by Scan-Speak in Denmark, based on the Illuminator series. It is flush-mounted in the front baffle, uses a neodymium magnet and is built as a long-throw design with a resonance frequency of 34 Hz. The rear passive radiator, also Illuminator-based, is a 180 mm unit with an aluminium alloy cone, and together with the front driver it forms a 4th order alignment. Inside that frame the moving diaphragm of the front unit measures 95 mm, while the radiator's aluminium cone is 125 mm across, so the rear surface is larger than the active one. High frequencies go to a custom Mundorf AMT tweeter. The cabinet is made of Panzerholz, a dense wood-based laminate produced in Germany, arranged in a sandwich construction without parallel surfaces and machined on CNC equipment to tight tolerances. Duelund CAST Cu parts fill the filter network, both the capacitors and the inductors, and every joint is hand-wired directly between components instead of being laid out on a circuit board. Because the passive radiator faces backwards, the distance between the rear panel and the wall behind the speaker affects how the low end couples to the space.

Pairing

The low nominal load combined with a moderate sensitivity figure suggests a solid-state amplifier or a high-current valve design able to hold steady into a low load. With single-wire terminals, bi-amping is not an option. In a room of around 20 m2 the tall cabinet, which needs no separate stand, puts the tweeter close to the height of a seated listener directly from the floor, and the rear radiator should be given clear air behind it rather than a bookcase back wall.

Alternatives

The Kawero! Colibri is the smallest model in the range, a 4 liter Panzerholz box with a custom Purifi 4 inch woofer, two side passive radiators and a 24 mm Ellipticor tweeter.
