The iLoud Precision 5 MKII is a compact active two-way studio monitor from the Italian company IK Multimedia, the second generation of its smallest Precision model. Each speaker is sold singly, and a unit is priced at around USD 666. The range also includes the larger Precision 6 MKII.

Key specs that matter

A 5 inch ultralight coated paper mid-woofer is paired with a 1.5 inch textile dome tweeter reinforced with graphene, in a bass-reflex cabinet. Custom Class D amplification delivers 135 W RMS in total per unit. IK quotes a response of 46 Hz to 30 kHz within 1 dB, with extension to 39 Hz at -4 dB, and phase within 20 degrees from 150 Hz upward. Maximum level is 101.6 dB continuous and 113.3 dB peak. Each monitor stands 305 mm high, 177 mm wide and 248 mm deep and weighs 7 kg. The gap of 11.7 dB between continuous and peak output leaves room for transients at mixing levels.

Engineering and use context

Relative to the original model the tweeter has been wholly redesigned, and the HDF cabinet was made more solid with stronger internal bracing and careful damping to cut resonance. Internal processing runs at 96 kHz, and a selectable low-frequency extension offers 35, 50, 65 or 80 Hz settings for different placements and uses. Connections are an XLR analog input and a 6.35 mm jack input, and the back plate carries manual volume and frequency adjustments. An automatic standby mode saves power when no signal arrives. A MEMS measurement microphone with a clamp comes in the box. Other MKII changes include wall and ceiling mounting points, which make the monitor usable in multi-speaker surround layouts such as Dolby Atmos, a revised look with a front-facing LED, and firmware rewritten for faster updates. An optional metal mounting bracket is sold separately, and four aluminium Isolation Pods are supplied to decouple each monitor from the desk or stand beneath it.

Pairing

An audio interface with balanced outputs, a DAC with XLR or jack line outputs, or a preamplifier with volume control feeds the monitors directly, and no power amplifier is needed. Because every unit is sold individually, a stereo setup needs two, and IK's iLoud Sub can be added below them to reach deeper bass in a 20 m2 studio or living room.
