The Footprint01 Gen2 is a tri-amplified three-way active studio monitor from Barefoot Sound, launched together with a second-generation Footprint02 as the larger of the two models. It accepts analogue line signals directly and carries its own DSP, converters and amplifiers, so no external power amplifier is involved. Barefoot lists it at USD 4,495 per pair, in a textured gray polyester finish.

Key specs that matter

Barefoot equips each cabinet with two 8-inch aluminium cone woofers with high magnetic flux motors, a 5-inch aluminium cone midrange and a 1-inch dual-ring radiator tweeter. Dedicated Class D channels supply 500 W to the woofers, 150 W to the midrange and 60 W to the tweeter, a total of 710 W. Response is quoted as 36 Hz to 40 kHz within 3 dB and 39 Hz to 30 kHz within 1 dB, with an active crossover at 170 Hz and 3,600 Hz. Maximum continuous output is at least 113 dB SPL, and total harmonic distortion stays below 0.005 percent at full output. The cabinet measures 362 mm high, 259 mm wide and 346 mm deep, and each speaker weighs 18.3 kg.

Engineering and use context

Barefoot builds a sealed 12.8 litre MDF box with an aluminium driver baffle and polyurethane damping inside. The two woofers are arranged in Barefoot's Dual-Force layout, in which they are coupled so that opposing forces are cancelled and the cast frames also add rigidity. Signal processing runs at 96 kHz with 28-bit conversion, adding a latency of 3 ms, and signal to noise is at least 100 dB. SPOC, short for Spectrally Optimized Conversion, puts analogue filtering ahead of the digital converter to improve noise performance and resolution. MEME, or Multi Emphasis Monitor Emulation, lets the user switch the monitor to models of common reference playback systems, including consumer speakers and classic mix cubes, to check a mix without extra hardware. The first-generation Footprint01 used paper composite woofers, a 4-inch midrange and 650 W of amplification, so the Gen2 changes both driver materials and power.

Pairing

Inputs are a female XLR and a male TRS connector with 20 kohm impedance, and input sensitivity is given as 90 dB at minus 15 dBV. That makes a balanced line output from a recording interface, a monitor controller or a line preamplifier the natural source. Mounting points are compatible with Triad-Orbit and Konig and Meyer stand hardware.

Alternatives

The Barefoot Footprint02 Gen2 is the more compact three-way active monitor of the same generation, with dual 6.5-inch woofers and 410 W per speaker.
