The ELAC BS312.2 from the Line 300 is a compact passive model with two drivers, introduced in early May 2024 at USD 1,999.98 per pair. Its aluminium enclosure comes in a choice of gloss black and gloss white paint, and the key driver is a JET 6 tweeter built by hand in Kiel, Germany.
Key specs that matter
The JET 6 is an air motion transformer tweeter of the sixth generation, paired with a 115 mm AS-XR cone woofer. Crossover is at 3,200 Hz. ELAC specifies a response from 42 Hz to 50,000 Hz and a sensitivity of 87 dB at 2.83 V and 1 m. Nominal impedance is 4 ohm, with a minimum of 3.4 ohm at 280 Hz. Power handling is 70 W nominal and 100 W peak per channel, and recommended amplifier power runs from 50 to 150 W per channel. Each speaker measures 123 mm wide, 208 mm high and 282 mm deep and weighs 7.2 kg.
Engineering and use context
For the JET 6 ELAC developed an entirely new layout of the folded aluminium foil and a new faceplate. The company states that these changes give a more linear response, lower distortion and a lower resonant frequency than the previous JET generation, and that the tweeter extends into the ultrasonic range. The woofer uses ELAC's Crystal Membrane with AS-XR technology, an aluminium sandwich cone with a crystal-shaped aluminium dome, intended to extend the usable frequency range of the driver. The cabinet is made of aluminium, which gives high rigidity at low wall thickness, and the near absence of a front baffle is a trait of the concept. Bass loading is reflex. The line traces back to the ELAC 305 compact of 1993, and the earlier BS 312 used the fifth-generation JET 5. The JET principle itself relies on selective variance of the masses in motion. ELAC also states that the tweeter has a very fast transient response. Connection is through 5-way metal binding posts. ELAC launched the BS312.2 in 2024 together with updated Vela 2.0 and Solano 2.0 models as part of an expansion of its speaker lines.
Pairing
The lower limit on recommended amplifier power is higher than for many small speakers, and the low impedance minimum calls for electronics rated for low loads. ELAC offers the LS 60 floor stand for this model at USD 459.98, and colour grille covers are sold separately at USD 199.98.
Alternatives
The ELAC BS302 is the compact closed-box bookshelf model of the same Line 300, with a 20 mm cloth dome tweeter and a 78 by 108 mm oval AS cone woofer.
