Morel of Israel offers the Avyra 622 as the stand-mount member of the Avyra range. The company describes the series as bringing its hand-built drive units into a lower price bracket. Alongside it sit the Avyra 633 tower, the three-driver Center C5, a subwoofer, the Soundstand B1 and wireless versions, including an Avyra 622 Wireless.

Key specs that matter

Two drive units are used in a bass reflex MDF cabinet. The 160 mm mid/bass unit combines a one-piece cone with a twin-magnet motor and a 75 mm aluminium voice coil in Morel's external voice coil layout, known as EVC. The 28 mm Acuflex tweeter is a handcrafted soft dome, also with an aluminium voice coil. The crossover point is 2.2 kHz. Morel quotes a frequency response of 35 Hz to 20 kHz within plus 2 and minus 3 dB, a sensitivity of 88 dB at 2.83 V and 1 m and a nominal impedance of 4 ohm. The cabinet measures 241 mm wide, 360 mm high and 271 mm deep, and each speaker weighs 8 kg. Finishes are black, white and wood, with walnut, oak and wenge veneers listed for the wood option. The larger Avyra 633 uses the same woofer and tweeter types but doubles the woofer count in a 2.5-way tower.

Engineering and use context

The external voice coil puts the coil outside the magnet rather than inside it, which makes room for a big coil on a modest driver, and the double magnet motor adds flux around that coil. The woofer cone is made in one piece with its dust cap from Morel's damped polymer composite. Morel assembles these units by hand in its Israeli factory, and each motor uses high-flux double ferrite magnets with venting. Reflex loading extends the bass of a cabinet this size, which suits the speaker to shelves, stands or a desk in rooms of about 20 m2. The rear panel carries one set of terminals only, with no provision for bi-wiring or bi-amping. Morel intends the speaker for music systems as well as surround setups, where the Center C5 and the Avyra subwoofer complete a multichannel set.

Pairing

Such a demanding load calls for electronics rated into low loads with a sound current reserve, and the moderate sensitivity means an integrated amplifier of moderate power is sufficient in a normal living room. The Soundstand B1 is Morel's matching stand for the speaker.
