The JBL Tune 520C USB-C is a wired on-ear headphone that connects directly to a USB-C socket on the source instead of a 3.5 mm headphone socket, a connection JBL presents as nearly universal on current digital audio devices. JBL lists High-Resolution Audio support and places a DSP chipset in the signal path, so the headphone receives a digital stream over the USB-C lead rather than an analogue signal from the source. JBL advises checking USB-C compatibility with each device. It is offered in black, white and purple, with a JBL price of USD 34.95.
Key specs that matter
Two 32 mm dynamic drivers are fitted. JBL states a frequency response of 10 Hz to 40 kHz, an impedance of 32 ohm and a maximum SPL of 95 dBA. Sensitivity is given as 103 dB SPL at -10 dBFS, 1 kHz and maximum volume, a digital reference rather than the usual 1 mW figure. The DSP handles audio up to 96 kHz and 24 bit. The headphone weighs 150 g. The microphone sensitivity is listed as -38 dB.
Engineering and use context
Because the conversion from digital to analogue happens inside the headphone, it works with sources that have no analogue headphone jack, and no battery or charging is needed. A three-button remote on the cable controls playback and volume and also switches the EQ presets. The default preset is a balanced JBL tuning, Bass lifts the low end and Vocal lifts the midrange. The cable is flat, tangle-free and has a reinforced connection at the plug for durability. The ear pads are padded for all-day use, and the headphone packs away flat when not in use. The microphone sits on the cable, so calls are taken without removing the headphone or reaching for the source device. JBL lists the maximum operating temperature at 45 degrees C.
Pairing
No app or Bluetooth pairing is involved, and JBL names PCs, laptops, phones, tablets and gaming devices among the compatible USB-C sources. The Tune 520C USB-C is meant as an everyday carry for work, home and travel. The box includes only the headphone and warranty papers, as the cable is fixed to the headphone. The level ceiling is set by the built-in DSP, which also stores the three EQ presets inside the headphone itself, so the chosen preset does not depend on software running on the source device.
