The JBL Tour One M3 Smart Tx is a wireless over-ear noise cancelling headphone sold together with the JBL Smart Tx, a separate Bluetooth audio transmitter with its own touch screen. The transmitter connects to in-flight entertainment systems, TVs and PCs and can also broadcast to other Auracast-enabled speakers or headphones.

Key specs that matter

Inside the cups sit 40 mm dynamic drivers with mica domes. JBL quotes 10 Hz to 40 kHz, an impedance of 18 ohm, sensitivity of 122 dB SPL at 1 kHz and a maximum SPL of 94 dB. The Li-ion cell of 850 mAh runs music for 70 hours at most with ANC switched off, or 40 hours with it engaged, while talk time is 38 hours or 34 hours respectively. A full charge takes 2 hours, while 5 minutes of charging restore 5 hours of play. The headphone weighs 278 g. Bluetooth 5.3 carries SBC, AAC, LC3 and LDAC, with profiles A2DP 1.4, AVRCP 1.6.2 and HFP 1.8. JBL states that LDAC moves about three times the data of conventional Bluetooth audio at 24 bit. Transmit power stays below 10 dBm EIRP in the 2.4 GHz band, the call microphones are rated at -38 dBV per pascal, and the power input is 5 V at 1 A.

Engineering and use context

Noise cancelling uses eight microphones, four on and in each cup, adjusting in real time under the name True Adaptive Noise Cancelling 2.0, with Ambient Aware and Talk Thru modes. Four further beamforming mics handle calls, and the model is Zoom certified. Smart Talk lowers playback and lets in ambient sound when the wearer speaks. A built-in DAC accepts lossless digital audio over the supplied USB-C cable, and a USB-C to 3.5 mm cable covers analogue jacks. JBL Spatial 360 adds head tracking. Personi-Fi 3.0 builds a profile from a hearing test in the app, with a 12-band EQ and separate left and right balance. The Smart Tx transmitter weighs 34.5 g, runs up to 18 hours on a 550 mAh cell, uses the LC3 codec and gives full control of the headphone from its screen without a phone. The transmitter takes digital sources over USB-C and analogue ones through a 3.5 mm jack, charges in 2 hours and transmits below 13 dBm EIRP.

Pairing

Multipoint links two Bluetooth devices at once. Google Fast Pair and Google Audio Switch work with Android. Through Auracast the headphone can receive public broadcasts such as airport announcements or gym screens via the JBL app. Supplied with it are the transmitter, a pair of USB-C leads for digital and analogue use, an adapter from USB-C to type A and a carrying case. The app can also switch Bluetooth behaviour between a music priority and a video priority.
