The TH1000RPmk2 is a Fostex over-ear model with a closed back, released on 25 December 2025 as the second generation of the TH1000RP. It was introduced together with the open-back TH1100RPmk2, and the two models share the same driver while differing in housing design. The TH1000RPmk2 uses a solid hard maple enclosure finished in Awa Aizome, a traditional Japanese indigo dye.
Key specs that matter
Fostex calls its transducer the RP driver mk2, a planar magnetic type with a fully driven flat diaphragm, which the maker says moves the whole surface uniformly and with consistent phase across all frequency bands. Frequency response runs from 10 Hz to 40 kHz. Sensitivity is 100 dB per mW and impedance is 32 ohm, with maximum input rated at 3,000 mW. Weight is about 420 g without the cable. The headphone connects through a 2-pole 3.5 mm socket, and the supplied cable is a 2 m unbalanced Y lead made from 7N grade high-purity oxygen-free copper.
Engineering and use context
Fostex states that the mk2 driver uses a larger planar diaphragm than the one in the T50RP mk4 and a redesigned printed coil pattern. The magnetic circuit was reworked with larger magnets to optimise flux distribution and suppress unwanted resonance. Acoustic filtering and damping materials were added inside the driver to control air movement, with the aim of improving low-frequency reproduction over the first TH1000RP. The housing base plate and hanger are made from magnesium alloy, which Fostex says cuts weight by 20 percent compared with aluminium. Head pad and headband are covered in natural sheepskin. The new ear pads have a revised shape and two layers, with soft low-density urethane outside and high-elasticity urethane inside, covered in a silk protein-based synthetic leather that the maker rates at three times the durability of the earlier pads.
Pairing
Fostex replaced the 2-pin cable connection of the first generation with 2-pole mini plugs for wider compatibility with aftermarket leads. A 4.4 mm balanced cable is sold separately for players and amplifiers with that output, while the stock unbalanced lead suits standard single-ended jacks. Given its easy electrical load, a source with moderate output power is enough.
Alternatives
The Fostex TH1100RPmk2 uses the same RP driver mk2 in an open-back housing with etched aluminium parts at the housing opening.
