Fostex, the Japanese transducer maker, built the T60RPmk2CL around the company's fourth generation RP planar magnetic driver, mounted in a sealed housing of solid black walnut. It is the closed counterpart of the open T60RPmk2 and was introduced alongside the T50RPmk4CL. Fostex classes the model as circumaural, with pads that surround the ear rather than rest on it.

The rated impedance is 28 ohm. Fostex lists sensitivity at 98 dB per mW and accepts up to 3,000 mW of input power. Fostex quotes a frequency response of 10 Hz to 40,000 Hz. The headphone weighs about 360 g without its cable. Each earcup has its own 2-pole 3.5 mm receptacle, so the cable splits into a Y shape and plugs into both sides. Fostex describes the drive unit type as dynamic in its spec table while naming the diaphragm an RP planar magnetic design. The box contains a 2 m unbalanced cable ending in a 3.5 mm plug, a 3.5 mm to 6.3 mm adapter and a dedicated pouch.

Engineering and use context

RP stands for Regular Phase, the Fostex name for its full-range planar diaphragm, where a flat film carrying a printed conductor pattern is moved by magnets instead of a cone and voice coil. In this fourth generation version the maker revised the magnet distribution and optimised the magnetic flux, aiming at better transient behaviour and frequency accuracy. The walnut enclosure is fully sealed, which keeps sound from leaking out and outside noise from reaching the listener, making the model usable in a studio next to microphones or in shared spaces. The ear pads are thicker than before, use low-resilience foam and are angled so they sit along the contour of the skull. Replacement pads covered in Toray Ultrasuede are offered as an option for owners who prefer a fabric surface to the stock covering. The sealed rear also means the acoustic character depends partly on the pad seal, so the angled pad geometry was part of the redesign rather than a comfort detail alone.

As a sensitive headphone that is easy to drive, the T60RPmk2CL reaches usable levels from a phone, laptop or audio interface, and a dedicated headphone amplifier gives extra reserve given the high power handling of the diaphragm. The supplied adapter covers mixing desks and home amplifiers with a full-size headphone socket. Because the cable detaches at both cups, Fostex offers the ET-RP4.4BL2Y balanced cable with a 4.4 mm 5-pole plug for players and amplifiers that have such an output.
