The R2-D2 model, code ATH-CKS50TW2 R2, is one of four Star Wars themed editions of the Audio-Technica ATH-CKS50TW2 true wireless in-ear earphones, next to Grogu, Darth Vader and The Mandalorian, the last of which Japan offered only through the brand's online store. Lucasfilm oversaw the design and the product is officially licensed. The Japanese release date was April 25, 2025, and the American launch followed on May 4 at USD 179, against USD 149 for the plain model, with electronics unchanged.

Key specs that matter

The earpieces use 9 mm dynamic drivers with 110 dB/mW sensitivity, 20 ohm impedance and a 5 to 20,000 Hz range. The wireless side uses Bluetooth 5.3 in the 2.4 GHz band, the A2DP, AVRCP, HFP and TMAP profiles, SBC, AAC and LC3 codecs, SCMS-T content protection, 44.1 and 48 kHz sampling at 16 bit, and a transmission band of 20 to 20,000 Hz. Calls are picked up by omnidirectional MEMS microphones with -38 dB sensitivity and a 100 to 8,000 Hz range. Without noise cancelling a single charge gives up to 25 hours of music, and the case brings the maximum to around 65 hours. Built-in 3.85 V lithium-ion cells power both the buds (about 7.2 g each) and the 51.5 g case. The earpieces are rated IP55 and can be washed in water.

Engineering and use context

Colouring follows the droid - mostly white with blue details - and the case lid carries the line The droid you're looking for. Rather than spoken prompts, the buds report their status with comic droid beeps and whistles taken straight from the films, each conveying a different mood. The Connect app for this edition shows Star Wars artwork, its Soundscape function can loop the interior of the Millennium Falcon or an X-wing cockpit, and the private timer alarm uses an R2-D2 sound. A themed collector box and sticker come in the package. The earpieces switch themselves on when pulled apart and off when snapped together magnetically, which avoids draining the battery without returning them to the case. Noise cancelling uses a hybrid digital system, and the case charges either by cable or by resting it on a Qi charger.

Pairing

Two Bluetooth sources can stay linked at once through multipoint. Phones that support LE Audio can connect with LC3 once the earphones have the relevant firmware installed, with some other functions disabled in that mode. Four tip sizes from XS to L and a short USB charging cable are packed with the earphones.
