The MTPro is BASN Audio's planar-driver earphone for stage and studio monitoring, aimed at musicians, drummers and singers as well as at listeners who use earphones for critical listening and mixing. Unlike the hybrid and dual-dynamic models that make up most of the BASN range, it relies on a single large planar driver per side. BASN lists it at USD 189.99, with sale pricing at USD 169.99, in rich black, cool silver, blue and deep purple, and covers it with a 12-month replacement warranty.

Key specs that matter

Each shell is fitted with one planar magnetic driver of 14.5 mm diameter. BASN's specification table gives a frequency response of 20 Hz to 40 kHz, an impedance of 32 ohm and a sensitivity of 100 dB. The shells use detachable MMCX sockets, and the main cable is a 4-core single crystal copper design ending in a 3.5 mm plug. The design is closed, relying on the ear tip seal for passive noise isolation.

Engineering and use context

BASN places the planar diaphragm inside a double-sided magnetic array, with magnets on both faces of the film, a layout the maker says lets the diaphragm move quickly. The housing is machined by CNC from aluminium alloy and given a matte finish that resists scratching, and although the body is fairly large it is not heavy, and each shell has three small vents on its side. An angled nozzle is long enough to allow either a deep or a shallow insertion. The supplied audio lead combines a coaxial structure with Litz shielding, and both cables have L-shaped plugs. A second braided lead, finished in silver-grey against the brown audio cable, has a microphone and volume control for calls, and the MMCX sockets swivel so the cable can follow the ear. Nine pairs of silicone tips and three pairs of memory foam tips are packed alongside a metal carrying case, a 3.5 mm to 6.4 mm adapter, a cable clip, a cleaning tool and an MMCX removal tool.

Pairing

The MTPro is less sensitive than the hybrids in the BASN catalogue, so it asks for more output voltage for the same level, and a portable DAC with a headphone stage or a desktop headphone amplifier gives extra reserve, although BASN also lists mobile devices as suitable sources. The MMCX lead connects directly to in-ear monitoring systems, and the full-size adapter fits mixer and audio interface outputs used during tracking and mixing.
