Key specs that matter
An 11 mm dynamic driver is fitted per side, with a rated frequency response of 20 Hz to 20 kHz, an impedance of 32 ohm, a sensitivity of 102 dB SPL at 1 kHz and a maximum SPL of 94 dB. Total playback reaches 35 hours, made up of 7 hours in the earbuds and 28 hours from the case. With standard ANC switched on the earbud figure drops to 6 hours, and with True Adaptive ANC to 5 hours. A single earbud weighs 4.9 g, the two together 9.8 g, and the charging case adds 43.7 g. Bluetooth 5.2 is used with the A2DP 1.3, AVRCP 1.6 and HFP 1.8 profiles.
Engineering and use context
The earbud cells are 45 mAh lithium-ion units at 3.85 V, while the case carries a 620 mAh cell at 3.8 V. A full cable charge from empty takes 2 hours and a wireless charge 4 hours, and a 15-minute Speed Charge adds four hours of playtime. Power input is 5 V at 1 A through a Type-C USB cable. Six beamforming microphones handle calls and are meant to reduce wind and noise interference, with a stated microphone sensitivity of -38 dBV/Pa at 1 kHz. A VoiceAware function controls the amount of microphone input fed back into the earbuds. The housings use oval tubes, oval silicone tips and a slim pill shape intended to fit smaller ears, and three tip sizes come in the box. Multi-point connection lets the earbuds switch between two Bluetooth sources, and Dual Connect allows the left, right or both earbuds to be used, in mono or stereo. Touch controls operate playback, and voice commands reach Hey Google on Android or Alexa, which needs Android 6.0 or later for full access. In the JBL Headphones app the owner picks a listening mode, changes noise cancelling and ambient levels, remaps controls and shapes the EQ, while spoken prompts guide the menus in the owner's language. The maximum operating temperature is 45 degrees C.
Pairing
As a Bluetooth product the Live Free 2 links to a phone, tablet or computer with no separate amplifier or DAC, and quick pairing is offered for Android devices.
