The Aiva 2 is an open-back planar magnetic headphone from Sendy Audio, the higher-end brand of Chinese headphone maker Sivga. It follows the original Aiva, which was Sendy's first widely known model, after three years of development. It keeps the wooden earcups and suspension headband of Sendy's designs while updating the driver.
Key specs that matter
Each earcup holds a 97 x 76 mm planar magnetic driver with a double nepheline magnetic array and a 1 micron diaphragm. Frequency response is 20 Hz to 40 kHz, sensitivity is 96 dB/mW and impedance is 32 ohms. The headphone weighs 420 g. The cable is 6N single-crystal copper terminating in a 4.4 mm balanced plug, with a 3.5 mm adapter supplied.
Engineering and use context
In a planar magnetic design, the motor spreads the driving force across a thin, flat diaphragm suspended between magnet arrays, so the whole surface moves together, avoiding the break-up of cone drivers. The double nepheline array surrounds the film with magnets for a stronger, more even field, and the ultra-thin diaphragm keeps moving mass very low. The diaphragm is a composite of ceramic oxide, thermoplastic elastomer, polyurethane fibres and multilayer nano polyester. The driver is oval, following the shape of the ear. The earcups are solid zebrano wood, CNC-machined and then sanded and finished by hand, so the grain of each pair differs. The headband combines a matte black stainless steel arch with a leather strap below it that carries the weight, which helps the headphone feel lighter. Earcups swivel 30 degrees, and the contoured pads use real leather with velvet for comfort. Clamping force is low. As an open-back design, it lets outside sound in and leaks sound out, so it suits quiet rooms. The detachable cable is a four-wire design that connects to each earcup through a 3.5 mm mini jack, and its plugs combine stainless steel, wood and precision pins, with a wooden Y-splitter and chin slider. The outer cups carry a geometric scale-pattern grille, and the suspension strap slides vertically to adjust the fit. Accessories include a leather carrying bag and a portable hemp bag. The launch price was USD 599.
Pairing
The Aiva 2 can be driven by phones and dongles, but planar headphones gain from amplifiers with current reserve. The 4.4 mm balanced cable suits balanced portable players and desktop amplifiers.
Alternatives
Sendy Audio's Peacock is another open-back planar headphone of the brand with an 88 mm Quad-Former driver.
