The AirS1 is a wireless open-ear sports headset from BASN Audio, a company otherwise known for wired in-ear monitors aimed at stage musicians. BASN lists the AirS1 as its only Bluetooth headphone series, next to wired lines such as Bsinger, Bmaster, Metalen and the planar ASONE. BASN calls it an air conduction headphone and describes an over-ear sound cavity design, in which the speaker housing sits outside the ear canal rather than inside it. The regular price is USD 59.99, currently reduced to USD 29.99, and colour choices include black, grey, white, blue, beige and two-tone black-red and black-grey.
Key specs that matter
Each earpiece uses one dynamic driver, and the wireless link uses Bluetooth 5.3 and is specified to hold a connection over distances of up to 12 m. A built-in 70 mAh battery gives up to 8 hours of playback per charge, and the headset weighs 20 g. Protection against sweat, light rain and moisture is rated at IPX5.
Engineering and use context
BASN offers two ways to wear the AirS1. Used as supplied, the open-ear design leaves the ear canal free, which the company presents as a way to reduce ear pain and the risk of hearing damage. Fitting the included ear tips turns it into a more private in-ear listener with better isolation from outside noise. The ear hooks are made of super-elastic memory steel wire that bends through 360 degrees, so the band can be shaped around different ears and stays in place during running, cycling, hiking and gym workouts. Charging uses a magnetic connector and takes about 1 hour for a full battery, while a 10-minute quick charge adds roughly an hour of listening. For calls, a MEMS microphone works with environmental noise cancellation that suppresses surrounding noise and picks up the voice. Playback and calls are handled with physical push buttons rather than touch surfaces.
Pairing
As a self-contained Bluetooth headset with an internal amplifier, battery and controls, the AirS1 connects directly to any Bluetooth-enabled smartphone, tablet or computer, and needs no separate DAC, headphone amplifier or cable.
Alternatives
For wired listening BASN offers the Bmaster, a triple-driver in-ear monitor sold at USD 80.99 in a version with a detachable 2-pin cable, for a sealed fit instead of the open-ear layout.
