Denon built the AH-GC30 as a closed, circumaural Bluetooth headphone with active noise cancelling, and it is now listed in the archive section of the company's range. It came in black or white, weighs 287 g, and uses a precision aluminium hanger with a synthetic leather headband. The earcups fold flat and inward, and a carry case is supplied.

Key specs that matter

The 40 mm dynamic transducer in each cup is of the FreeEdge type, and the headphone carries Hi-Res certification. Denon quotes a playback range of 5 Hz to 50,000 Hz, impedance of 16 ohms, sensitivity of 98 dB/mW and a maximum input of 1,000 mW. Bluetooth is version 5.0 at Class 1 with a maximum transmission power of 10 mW, supporting the A2DP, AVRCP, HSP and HFP profiles. Codec support covers aptX HD, aptX, AAC and SBC. Continuous playback with both Bluetooth and noise cancelling switched on reaches about 20 hours.

Engineering and use context

Denon developed its own active noise cancelling for this model, with a pair of microphones in every earcup. Three modes are provided, aimed at air travel, commuting and office use. Power comes from an internal 3.7 V lithium polymer rechargeable battery, charged over the supplied USB Micro-B cable. The USB connection can also carry audio, accepting 16-bit PCM at 32, 44.1 and 48 kHz under Audio device class 1.0, with HID class 1.11 for controls. When the battery is flat or a cable connection is preferred, a detachable 3.5 mm audio cable turns it into a wired headset, and Denon describes the whole design as intended for extended wear. Two audio cables of 1.3 m each are packed, both carrying an in-line remote and microphone, so calls work in wired mode too. The headband is soft and adjustable, and the earcups use dual-movement memory foam. Denon gives an operating temperature range of 5 to 40 degrees C. Playback and calls are handled by controls on the earcup, and settings are available through the Denon Audio app.

Pairing

Dual simultaneous device connectivity lets the AH-GC30 stay linked to two Bluetooth sources at once, for example a computer for music and a phone for calls. A phone or laptop with aptX HD can use that higher-resolution Bluetooth codec, and devices without it connect through aptX, AAC or SBC instead. A computer can also send audio over the USB cable.

Alternatives

Denon also makes the AH-D5200, another over-ear headphone model in its current range.
