The AH-D5200 is a closed-back over-ear headphone from Denon, positioned below the AH-D9200 in its home listening range. It pairs Denon's FreeEdge 50mm drivers, made in Japan, with earcups of solid Zebrawood, bringing the wooden-housing approach of Denon's pricier models to a more attainable model intended for home use with a hi-fi system or dedicated headphone amplifier.

Key specs that matter

Denon fits 50mm FreeEdge dynamic drivers rated from 5Hz to 40kHz. The housings are solid Zebrawood, and the drivers are mounted on vibration-reducing resin baffles. The supplied 3m fabric-covered cable uses 4N oxygen-free copper conductors, is detachable and runs to both earcups, and ends in a 3.5mm plug with a 6.3mm adapter. Total weight with the cable is about 445g, of which the cable accounts for roughly 70g.

Engineering and use context

The FreeEdge design supports the diaphragm without a conventional fixed edge, so the moving part is freer to travel as a piston and the diaphragm material can be chosen for low mass and high rigidity to minimise unwanted resonance. Mounting the driver on a resin baffle that absorbs vibration keeps energy from the driver out of the earcup structure. Zebrawood is a dense hardwood whose natural damping helps suppress resonances in the enclosure, one reason Denon uses real wood rather than plastic for its higher-tier closed headphones. Because the cable enters both earcups, each channel has its own run, with no signal wires routed through the headband. The long 3m cable is intended for connection to a hi-fi system or television from a seated listening position, and the detachable design makes replacement straightforward if the cable is damaged. Soft earpads and a padded headband spread the weight for long listening sessions, and the closed-back construction isolates the listener from room noise and limits leakage to others nearby.

Pairing

Sensitivity is modest rather than high, so the AH-D5200 plays at usable levels from phones and laptops but benefits from a dedicated headphone amplifier or a quality headphone output on an integrated amplifier or AV receiver, which provides greater volume headroom. The 6.3mm adapter covers full-size sockets on hi-fi components, and a portable DAC with extra output is a practical option for use away from the main system.

Alternatives

Denon's own AH-D9200 is the brand's higher closed headphone, using bamboo earcups and a further-developed FreeEdge driver.
