The Ovo Evolution is a valve headphone amplifier from Fezz Audio, the Polish company set up in 2015 by brothers Tomasz and Maciej Lachowski near Bialystok as an offshoot of Toroidy, the toroidal transformer maker their father Lech Lachowski founded in 1992. It belongs to the Evolution series, a redesign of the whole Fezz range carried out with the Warsaw design studio Kabo and Pydo, which gave every model a symmetrical front panel with a window onto the tubes. The Ovo was presented in September 2025 at about EUR 3,495 and is built to order in Poland with a lead time of roughly six weeks.

Key specs that matter

The circuit runs in Class A as a single-ended triode amplifier with one 12AX7 in the input stage and two EL84 output valves connected as triodes, with automatic bias. Fezz rates output at 1,500 mW at 2 percent distortion, and distortion stays under 1 percent at 1,000 mW. Frequency response runs from 16 Hz to 120 kHz at -3 dB into 32 ohm. Headphones from 16 to 600 ohm are covered by three switchable ranges marked Low, Mid and High. The chassis measures 355 x 380 x 100 mm, weighs 10.5 kg and draws 40 W from the mains.

Engineering and use context

The output transformers come from Toroidy and use the toroidal core format that led to the founding of Fezz, and the power transformer is also a Toroidy part. Because each impedance range is matched on the output transformer, the full rated output is available on all three settings. The EL84 pair is arranged symmetrically. Three headphone sockets sit on the front - a 6.35 mm jack, a 4.4 mm Pentaconn and a four-pin XLR - alongside the volume knob, the impedance selector and an input selector. The Electro Harmonix tubes supplied sit under a sliding drawer on the top cover, so they can be swapped for other 12AX7 and EL84 types without opening the case. The amplifier holds only analogue circuitry, and a single rear slot accepts one optional board of about EUR 300 - a Bluetooth receiver with aptX and AAC, a DAC with coaxial and optical inputs on an AKM chip, or a moving magnet phono stage. A remote control is also optional.

Pairing

Rear inputs include one RCA pair and one balanced XLR pair, so a DAC or streamer with either output type can feed it directly. Matching RCA and XLR pass-through outputs let the Ovo sit between a source and a power amplifier or active speakers. Seven finishes are listed - Big Calm, Black Ice, Burning Red, EverGreen, Moonlight, Republika and Sunlight.

Alternatives

The Fezz Audio Omega Lupi is the brand's push-pull option, using four PCL86 tubes in Class AB1 with a 32 to 600 ohm output range in a 355 x 380 x 175 mm chassis.
