The WE-001 Duran Duran Special Edition is a portable cassette player and recorder from We Are Rewind, the French company formed in 2016 by two school friends, Romain Boudruche and Matthieu, which designs its products in France and has them made in China. The edition was created with Duran Duran and launched on 3 December 2025, and it comes with an exclusive cassette reissue of the band's 2000 album Pop Trash, marking its 25th anniversary. The price is EUR 169, USD 199 or GBP 149, against about USD 159 to 179.95 for the standard WE-001.

Key specs that matter

The player handles all cassette types from I to IV in two-track stereo and records on Type I tape. Playback response is 30 Hz to 12.5 kHz with Type I tape, signal to noise ratio is 50 dB, distortion is typically 0.3% and wow and flutter typically 0.2%. The 3.5 mm headphone output delivers 2 x 2 mW into 32 ohm. A Bluetooth 5.1 transmitter sends audio to wireless headphones or speakers at 3 to 5 m and remembers up to eight devices. The 3.5 mm input accepts line or microphone signals of 50 to 200 mV RMS, and recording response is 30 Hz to 10 kHz with 45 dB signal to noise ratio and 1% distortion. The 3.7 V lithium-ion battery of 2000 mAh gives about 10 to 12 hours of playback and charges in 4 to 5 hours over USB-C from a 5 V 1.5 A adapter, which is not included. The player measures 140.8 x 88.8 x 33.5 mm and weighs about 404 g.

Engineering and use context

The casing is made entirely of aluminium, and a circular clear window shows the cassette turning inside. For this edition the finish takes its cues from chrome, and the press material mentions an updated headphone amplifier designed for cassette playback. An auto-stop mechanism halts the tape at the end of a side, which protects the tape and the drive belt. A pencil is included for rewinding tape by hand, a traditional way of saving battery and motor wear. The Bluetooth transmitter lets the player feed modern wireless headphones, which cassette players of the past could not do. Recording from the line input makes it possible to copy music from a phone or computer onto blank tape, and the microphone mode serves for voice notes. The player charges like a phone, over USB-C, instead of using disposable batteries.

Pairing

Wired headphones plug into the headphone socket, and Bluetooth headphones or a portable speaker connect wirelessly. For recording, a phone, laptop or microphone connects to the input.

Alternatives

The We Are Rewind Blaster is the brand's portable cassette boombox with built-in speakers.
