iBasso's DX270 is a pocket music player sold with the R2R Ultra name that refers to its converter. It runs Android 13 on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 and sits between the entry-level DX180 and the top DX340 in the range, following on from the DX260 and DX240 generation. The US launch price was USD 1,149.

Key specs that matter

The discrete 8-channel, fully differential DAC combines a 20-bit R2R ladder with a 4-bit string section, built from 344 precision resistors matched to 1.4 parts in 100,000. iBasso quotes 130 dB dynamic range, THD+N better than -97 dB and zero-crossing distortion of -120 dB. Playback reaches PCM 768 kHz and DSD512. The balanced 4.4 mm jack delivers 1,050 mW into 32 ohm on battery and 1,575 mW when an external 12 V DC supply is connected. Other sockets are a 3.5 mm single-ended headphone output, a 3.5 mm coaxial output and USB-C 3.1 digital out. The 5.5-inch 1080 x 2160 touchscreen sits on a 136 x 73.5 x 19 mm body weighing 265 g, with 4 GB RAM, 128 GB storage and microSD expansion to 2 TB.

Engineering and use context

An FPGA-Master 3.0 chip with 7.5 times the logic of the previous generation drives the ladder, clocked by two femtosecond Accusilicon oscillators. It also works as a real-time calibration unit, compensating for resistor errors to lower THD+N and extend dynamic range, which is why the zero-crossing distortion typical of simple R2R designs stays low. A NOS mode and four in-house digital filters are selectable. The DC input bypasses the battery, raising voltage headroom for long desk sessions. The 4400 mAh cell gives up to 13.5 hours of playback and recharges from empty in about 2.5 hours. Besides Android, the player boots the Linux-based Mango OS for dedicated music use. Wireless covers dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0, sending LDAC and receiving SBC or AAC. The CNC-machined aluminium chassis has a tempered glass back, three buttons and a rotary volume dial, in silver or grey.

Pairing

The balanced socket also doubles as a line output at 3 Vrms on battery or 4 Vrms on DC power, so the DX270 can feed a desktop amplifier or active speakers. Its sub-ohm output impedance keeps multi-driver in-ear monitors stable, and the balanced current reserve covers most full-size dynamic headphones. The coaxial jack connects an external DAC.

Alternatives

The iBasso DX260 is the earlier player in the range, built around eight Cirrus Logic CS43198 chips with FPGA-Master 2.0, Android 11 and a 5-inch screen.
