The Cable+ Pro 2RCA-2RCA is an active stereo interconnect from Burson Audio of Melbourne, Australia, with a buffer circuit built into the cable itself. It was announced in spring 2017 with a launch date of 15 May 2017, about ten years after the company's original Burson Buffer product, and carried a list price of USD 199, with a pre-launch offer of USD 149. The idea behind it is impedance matching - Burson argues that unless every part of a system comes from one maker and one product line, a mismatch between source output and amplifier input is likely, and the cable is meant to remove it.

Key specs that matter

The RCA-to-RCA version measures 1.2 m in length and weighs roughly 200 g. Published figures list an input impedance of 250 kOhm and an output impedance of 3 ohm. Frequency response is within 1 dB from 0 Hz to 55 kHz, total harmonic distortion is below 0.005 percent, and signal-to-noise ratio exceeds 118 dB at 6 dB of gain. Power dissipation is quoted at 5 W, drawn as 1 VA over USB. Besides the 2RCA-2RCA layout, the range also came with a 3.5 mm AUX plug at the input and in an AUX-to-AUX version.

Engineering and use context

Inside a brushed aluminium housing sits a fully discrete buffer based on Burson's own discrete op-amp technology, with no integrated circuit in the signal path of the module. The conductors and plugs come from Canare of Japan. Because the circuit is active, the cable does nothing without power - a micro USB socket on the side of the housing takes 5 V, and the box contains the cable, a USB power lead and a USB power supply. That means a mains outlet or powered USB port has to be within reach of wherever the housing ends up behind the equipment. Burson describes the buffer as an isolation stage between a source - CD player, DVD player or media player - and the next amplification stage, whether a preamplifier, integrated amplifier or active loudspeakers. It goes in place of an ordinary RCA lead between two components with single-ended connections. Burson also states that the circuit raises the level from portable devices to standard line level, which matters mainly for the AUX-input versions fed from phones or players.
