The STEREO 70s is a slimline two-channel receiver from Marantz that pairs a stereo amplifier with home cinema style HDMI switching and HEOS network streaming. It made its debut at the CEDIA Expo in September 2023 with a US price of USD 1,000 and replaces the NR1200, the slim stereo receiver Marantz launched in 2019. It decodes no surround formats, so every source is played back in stereo.

Key specs that matter

Rated output is 75 W per channel into 8 ohm from 20 Hz to 20 kHz at 0.08% THD with both channels driven, 100 W per channel into 6 ohm at 1 kHz and 0.7% THD, and 150 W from one channel into 6 ohm at 10% THD. Video switching covers six HDMI inputs feeding a single ARC-capable HDMI output, three of those inputs pass 8K and 4K/120Hz video, and HDCP 2.3, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, HLG, ALLM and VRR are supported. Other inputs are one optical, one coaxial, three analogue line pairs, an MM phono stage and an AM/FM tuner. The chassis measures 442 x 373 x 109 mm and draws 210 W in operation and 0.2 W in standby, with black, silver and gold finishes offered.

Engineering and use context

Amplification is a discrete Class A/B design, and Marantz uses its Hyper-Dynamic Amplifier Modules in place of chip op-amps in the signal path. A Pure Direct mode switches off circuits not needed for playback, and an OLED display sits on the front. The video board upscales 1080p and 4K material to 8K, so a games console, streaming box and Blu-ray player can all route through the receiver to one television. HEOS Built-in handles multi-room playback, with AirPlay 2, Bluetooth, Spotify Connect, TIDAL, Amazon Music HD, Deezer and TuneIn among the services, and the unit is Roon Tested. Network and USB files play up to FLAC, WAV and ALAC at 192 kHz and 24 bit and DSD at 2.8 and 5.6 MHz. Bluetooth can also transmit to wireless headphones, and a wired headphone jack is fitted. Voice control works through Alexa, Google Assistant and Apple HomePod.

Pairing

Two subwoofer outputs and a main-zone preamp output allow the receiver to drive small bookshelf speakers with one or two subwoofers, or to feed a larger power amplifier. Speaker A and B terminals connect a second pair of speakers, and a separate Zone 2 preamp output can carry HDMI, digital, network or analogue sources to another room. The built-in MM stage accepts a turntable without an outboard phono box.

Alternatives

The Marantz NR1200 is the earlier slimline stereo receiver with the same per-channel rating, five 4K HDMI inputs and a launch price of USD 600.
