The Yamaha RX-V6A is a 7.2-channel AV receiver with CINEMA DSP 3D processing, seven HDMI inputs and a single HDMI output. It adds Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect and MusicCast multi-room streaming, and it can create wireless surround when paired with MusicCast 20 or MusicCast 50 speakers as rear channels.
Key specs that matter
Rated output is 100 W per channel into 8 ohms from 20 Hz to 20 kHz with two channels driven at 0.06% THD, and 125 W into 8 ohms at 1 kHz with one channel driven at 0.9% THD. Maximum effective output reaches 150 W into 8 ohms at 10% THD. The HDMI inputs pass 8K60B, 4K120AB and 24 Gbps signals on inputs 1 to 3, and the receiver supports eARC, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, VRR, ALLM and upscaling to 4K. Decoding covers Dolby Atmos with Height Virtualizer, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS:X plus DTS-HD Master Audio, alongside 17 DSP programs and SILENT CINEMA for headphones. The DAC is a Burr-Brown PCM5102A rated at 384 kHz and 32 bit. It measures 435 x 171 x 377 mm, or 245 mm high with the antenna raised, and weighs 9.8 kg.
Engineering and use context
Yamaha's high slew rate amplifier is meant to follow rapid changes in input level. Network playback handles FLAC up to 384 kHz and 24 bit, WAV and AIFF up to 384 kHz and 32 bit, ALAC up to 96 kHz and DSD up to 11.2 MHz. Height Virtualizer can use five speakers to recreate two ceiling channels or all seven to recreate four overhead channels, and virtual front height and virtual surround back speaker modes are provided. Other functions include Dialogue Lift, Pure Direct, adaptive DRC, audio delay of 0 to 500 ms and bi-amp capability. Inputs cover four analogue, one optical, one coaxial, a phono input, a front USB port, Ethernet and dual-band Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth uses SBC and AAC. There is a 2.2-channel preout, a headphone output, one 12 V trigger, FM, AM and DAB tuners depending on region, 8 SCENE presets and web browser control. Yamaha notes the model cannot be updated for QMS due to a hardware limitation. Standby draw is 0.1 W, and ECO mode and auto power standby are included. YPAO multi-point measurement and YPAO Volume are part of the feature set, and the AV Setup Guide app walks through cable connections and settings.
Pairing
A powered Zone 2 with its own preout lets a second room play a separate source, and party mode sends one source to both. Two subwoofer outputs feed separate bass units, and the phono input accepts a turntable directly.
Alternatives
The Yamaha RX-V4A is the smaller 5.2-channel receiver in the same series, rated at 80 W into 6 ohms with four HDMI inputs.
