The RX-V4A is the five-channel model of the redesigned RX-V receiver generation that Yamaha announced in August 2020, launched beside the seven-channel RX-V6A. It went on sale in the USA that month at an MSRP of USD 439.95, and the new generation brought a high-resolution LCD display with a jog dial and touch-sensitive buttons on the front.

Key specs that matter

Yamaha lists the configuration as 5.2, with five amplified channels and two subwoofer pre-outs. Rated output is 80 W per channel into 6 ohm at 0.06% THD from 20 Hz to 20 kHz with two channels driven, while European data adds 115 W into 6 ohm at 1 kHz and 0.9% THD with one channel driven. All four HDMI inputs pass 8K60 and 4K120 signals, and the single output supports eARC, HDCP 2.3, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HLG, BT.2020, VRR and ALLM, with upscaling to 4K. Decoding covers Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus and DTS-HD Master Audio, but not Dolby Atmos or DTS:X. The chassis measures 435 x 171 x 377 mm, or 245 mm tall with the antennas raised, and weighs 8.8 kg.

Engineering and use context

A high slew rate amplifier design drives the channels, and a Burr-Brown PCM5101A converter rated at 384 kHz and 32 bit handles the digital stage. CINEMA DSP offers 17 programs, with SILENT CINEMA for headphones, Pure Direct to bypass processing, a mode that restores content lost in lossy compression, Adaptive DRC and an audio delay of up to 500 ms. Network playback accepts FLAC and WAV up to 192 kHz, ALAC up to 96 kHz and DSD up to 11.2 MHz. Wi-Fi on 2.4 and 5 GHz, AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, Bluetooth with SBC and AAC, Roon Tested status and voice control through Alexa, Google Assistant and Siri come with the MusicCast platform. Yamaha raised the HDMI output supply to 300 mA to feed powered HDMI cables over long runs, and later confirmed that Quick Media Switching cannot be added by firmware because of a hardware limit. Standby draw is 0.1 W.

Pairing

The five speaker channels can be wired conventionally, or the MusicCast Surround feature assigns optional wireless MusicCast models to the rear positions without cables back to the receiver. Wired sources have one optical, one coaxial and three analogue inputs plus a front USB port, a headphone jack and an FM/AM tuner, with DAB in some regions. A turntable has to arrive at line level through its own phono stage, since the RX-V4A lacks a phono socket, and four SCENE presets recall inputs and settings from one button.
