The MRX 540 8K is the entry model of Anthem's fourth-generation MRX receiver range, below the MRX 740 8K and MRX 1140 8K. It decodes and processes up to 7.2 channels but carries five built-in power amplifiers. Anthem lists it at USD 1,899.99, and black is the only finish offered.

Key specs that matter

Each amplifier channel produces 100 W into 8 ohms and 130 W into 6 ohms, measured from 20 Hz to 20 kHz at 1% THD with two channels driven, and Anthem specifies speakers of more than 4 ohms. The pre-amplifier section delivers up to 5.2 V RMS below 0.1% THD, responds from 20 Hz to 30 kHz within 0.2 dB, and at a 4 V output reaches -100 dB THD+N and 110 dB signal-to-noise with IEC-A weighting. Converters run at 32-bit and 768 kHz. The video board has seven HDMI 2.1 inputs and two outputs, one with eARC, all with HDCP 2.3. Other connections are five analogue inputs, one line output, two coaxial and three optical digital inputs, an optical output, 7.2 pre-outs with two independent subwoofer feeds, and a USB-A socket for service. Decoding covers Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Atmos and Atmos Music, DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS:X and IMAX Enhanced, with Dolby Surround, the Neural and Virtual processing modes from DTS and Anthem's own AnthemLogic Music and Cinema modes for upmixing, and the maximum speaker layout is 5.2.2. Video passes at 8K/60 Hz or 4K/120 Hz, including full 4-4-4 chroma at 8K/60 Hz over 18.2 Gbps, with HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision and HLG. VRR, ALLM and Quick Frame Transport address gaming consoles. Streaming uses AirPlay 2, Google Cast, Spotify Connect and Bluetooth 4.2 over Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and FLAC, ALAC, WAV and DSD files are supported. A TFT screen of about 15 cm sits in a machined aluminium faceplate. Setup runs through a web interface, and IP and serial control connect to Savant, Control4, RTI, URC, Crestron and ELAN systems, with a phone app over Wi-Fi.

Pairing

Five passive loudspeakers plus two active subwoofers on the independent outputs use every built-in channel. A stereo power amplifier on the extra pre-outs completes a 7.2 setup.
