Anthem's MRX 1140 8K combines eleven internal power amplifier channels with decoding and bass management for as many as 15.2 channels. At its 2021 debut the US price was USD 4,000. Supported object formats include Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and IMAX Enhanced sound. Two zones are supported, each with HDMI and pre-out capability.

Key specs that matter

Anthem rates the amplifier at 140 W per channel into 8 ohm at 1 kHz with two channels driven, and calls the figure conservative. Frequency response is 20 Hz to 30 kHz within 0.2 dB, and the line-level signal to noise ratio is 110 dB, IHF-A weighted. Digital conversion runs through 32-bit 768 kHz DACs. The receiver has fifteen RCA pre-outs for main channels plus two for subwoofers. It measures 431.8 mm wide, 152.4 mm high and 364 mm deep, weighs 15.2 kg and draws up to 570 W from the mains.

Engineering and use context

The amplifier section mixes two topologies - channels 1 to 5 run in Class AB, while the remaining six use Class D. Anthem describes the model as an MRX 740 8K with four more amplifier channels and an upgraded toroidal power supply. On the video side the MRX 1140 8K uses HDMI 2.1 with HDCP 2.3 across seven dedicated 8K inputs and three outputs, one of which handles eARC, and passes 8K at 60 Hz or 4K at 120 Hz along with VRR and ALLM for game consoles. Wired and wireless connection options include five analog audio inputs, optical ports in a three-in, one-out arrangement, a coaxial input and a coaxial output, a LAN socket, two wireless antenna connectors, an IR input, an RS-232 port, three 12 V triggers and a USB port reserved for service. Streaming is built in through Apple AirPlay, Google Cast, Spotify Connect and Bluetooth. The unit can be set up and operated from a web user interface or through Anthem's smartphone remote application on the home network, and IP control drivers cover Savant, Control4, RTI, URC, Crestron and ELAN systems.

Pairing

Because the pre-outs extend to 15.2 channels, the eleven internal amplifiers can be supplemented by external power amplifiers for the extra channels or used alongside them for the main speakers. Twin subwoofer connections allow two powered subwoofers to be wired separately. The second zone can receive its own HDMI and line-level feed for another room.
