The Arcam AVR5 is a Class AB AV receiver in Arcam's HDA line, and its seven power amplifier channels follow, in Arcam's words, the circuits of the company's stereo amplifiers. Its surround processing supports Dolby Atmos and DTS:X up to 7.1.4, with 12 channels processed natively, and its video section is HDMI 2.0b with HDCP 2.2 and 4K UHD support.
Key specs that matter
Rated output with two channels driven over 20 Hz to 20 kHz at below 0.02% THD is 80 W per channel into 8 ohm and 100 W into 4 ohm. The 1 kHz ratings at 0.2% THD are 85 W and 120 W for two channels, falling to 60 W and 85 W when all seven work at once. Referenced to 100 W with A-weighting, noise sits 100 dB down, or 110 dB with Stereo Direct engaged, and residual hum and noise measures less than 0.15 mV. Analogue stereo inputs handle a maximum of 4.5 V rms into 47 kohm, their sensitivity can be set to 1, 2 or 4 V, and their response runs from 20 Hz to 20 kHz within 0.2 dB. Case size is 433 x 425 x 171 mm counting speaker terminals and feet, and net weight is 16.5 kg.
Engineering and use context
An ESS 9026PRO DAC handles conversion, and Arcam specifies an over-engineered power supply and transformer aimed at low noise. Video connections comprise seven HDMI inputs plus two HDMI outputs, with eARC on board. Streaming covers Apple AirPlay 2, Google Chromecast, Spotify Connect, UPnP via the free MusicLife control app and Bluetooth aptX HD, with MQA support and Roon Ready certification. Connection is by Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and control by RS232 or IR. Arcam publishes separate software builds for units with HDMI 2.0 and for units that received the HDMI 2.1 hardware upgrade. Maximum power draw is 1.5 kW, typical idle consumption is 90 W and standby uses under 0.5 W. Thermal dissipation is put at about 5200 BTU per hour at maximum and 340 BTU per hour at idle. The receiver runs on 110 to 120 V or 220 to 240 V mains at 50 to 60 Hz, weighs 19.8 kg packed and comes with an aerial for DAB and FM, a trio of antennas for wireless links and a remote powered by AAA cells.
Pairing
Pre-outs give 1 V rms nominal with a 5 V rms ceiling, a 560 ohm output impedance and -100 dB THD+N, enough to drive an external amplifier for the four overhead channels of a 7.1.4 system. Arcam lists the PA410 Class AB and PA240 Class G power amplifiers as complementary items, and the headphone output provides 5 V rms into 32 ohm.
Alternatives
The Arcam AVR11 moves the same seven-channel amplifier layout to HDMI 2.1 with 8K at 60 fps inputs and adds Auro-3D decoding.
