The SDX 3100 HV is a reference streaming DAC with a built-in preamplifier from T+A of Herford, Germany, part of the HV series. It combines two separate converters for DSD and PCM, a network streaming client, a fully analogue tone control and a headphone amplifier in one solid aluminium chassis.

Key specs that matter

For analogue sources there are two balanced XLR at 20 kOhm, accepting 500 mV to 18 V, and one RCA at 10 kOhm, accepting 250 mV to 9 V. Two pairs of variable balanced XLR outputs provide 1.45 V nominal and up to 19.6 V at 50 ohm. The preamplifier section covers 0.5 Hz to 300 kHz within 3 dB, with distortion and intermodulation both below 0.001 percent, signal to noise figures of 108 dB and 117 dB and channel separation of 110 dB. The case measures 170 x 460 x 460 mm and weighs 26 kg, in silver or titanium lacquer. Consumption peaks at 60 W for the analogue side and 40 W for the digital side, with standby under 0.5 W.

Engineering and use context

The preamplifier follows a fully symmetrical double mono layout, and volume is set by a relay-switched attenuator whose channels match within 0.05 dB at minus 60 dB. The tone control works entirely in the analogue domain and lets the owner change both bass and treble level and their corner frequencies, separately per channel if needed. PCM goes to a double differential quadruple converter using four 32-bit Burr-Brown chips per channel at up to 768 kHz, and DSD runs through a native 1-bit converter up to DSD1024. Six PCM filter modes, including NOS and Bezier options, and two DSD modes are selectable, followed by a third-order Bessel filter switchable between 60 and 120 kHz. Digital inputs include AES/EBU, coaxial RCA, BNC, two optical, two USB DAC ports and two HDMI inputs with ARC, plus two USB host ports for storage drives. Over the network the unit streams PCM up to 384 kHz and DSD256, with TIDAL Connect, Qobuz Connect, Spotify Connect, Deezer and Amazon Music HD, and Bluetooth 5.4 adds aptX HD. The class A headphone stage delivers up to 200 mA through 6.3 mm and balanced 4.4 mm Pentaconn sockets at 6 ohm output impedance. Optional MM or MC phono modules extend the analogue side.

With only balanced outputs, the SDX 3100 HV is meant to feed power amplifiers or active loudspeakers with XLR inputs, such as the A 3100 HV stereo amplifier or M 40 HV monoblocks of the HV range.
