The 808 MK5 is a modular stereo line preamplifier from Burmester of Berlin, the current version of a design whose first generation appeared in 1980. It belongs to the brand's Reference Line and is built around a main unit with configurable module slots and a separate power supply in its own chassis.

The main chassis offers six input module slots and two output module slots, so the owner chooses which connections are fitted. Optional modules include line and tape boards as well as MM and MC phono stages. Frequency response runs from 2 Hz to 680 kHz, input sensitivity is 110 mV for 1 V output, and line input noise sits 107 dB below the signal. Distortion is quoted at 0.001 percent, maximum input level at 17 V and maximum output at 21.5 V. Engineering and use context

Every module uses discrete Class A X-Amp amplification stages with pure DC coupling. Volume is set in 60 logarithmic steps by a passive R-2R network of precision resistors switched by gold-plated reed relays, giving absolute symmetry between the channels at each step. Internal signal paths use shielded Burmester silver cable, and a metal base board helps isolate the circuitry from vibration. The line has been refined over several generations since 1980. Placing the ultra-low-noise power supply in a separate case keeps transformers away from the audio boards. Standard balanced and unbalanced inputs belong to the base configuration, and further boards are sold separately. The chrome top plate can carry up to 20 special potentiometers, and remote trigger outputs on four channels at 10 V DC with 5.5/2.5 mm cylindrical connectors switch connected components on and off. The preamplifier comes with a wireless remote control and is offered in black or silver.

Pairing

With balanced outputs of low impedance the 808 MK5 can drive long XLR runs to Burmester power amplifiers in stereo or mono configurations. Once an MM or MC board is installed, the 808 MK5 accepts a turntable without any outboard phono stage.
