The 035 is a preamplifier from Burmester's Classic Line, launched in 2005 and derived from the earlier 011. It is fully balanced and DC-coupled, uses Burmester's X-Amp discrete Class A stages, and offers one module slot for a phono or CD input board, so it can be adapted to a system with a turntable or a CD player without changing the chassis. Burmester assembles it in Berlin, as it does all its models.
Key specs that matter
There are three XLR and two RCA inputs, each with an input trim of ±6 dB, and outputs on XLR and RCA plus a balanced tape output and a 6.3 mm headphone jack. Input impedance is 22 kohms, output impedance 230 ohms on XLR and 115 ohms on RCA, input sensitivity 160 mV and maximum output 12 V. Frequency response runs from below 10 Hz to 200 kHz and signal to noise ratio exceeds 105 dB. The power supply uses a 50 VA transformer with 55,000 µF of capacitance. The unit measures 482 x 96 x 336 mm and weighs 8 kg.
Engineering and use context
A 60-step R-2R relay network sets the volume, with gold-contact reed relays switching precision resistors instead of a potentiometer. The X-Amp stages are balanced, Class A, DC-coupled and discrete, with matched components, which removes coupling capacitors from the signal path. The module slot accepts a moving magnet or moving coil phono board, both balanced and DC-coupled, or a balanced CD input module. Input trim allows sources of different output levels to be matched so that switching between them does not change the volume. Tone and balance controls can be bypassed, a surround throughput allows integration with a home cinema processor, and BurLink provides control over RS-232 or USB. The high maximum output means the 035 can drive power amplifiers of low sensitivity without running out of voltage. The balanced tape output allows a recorder with XLR inputs to be connected. The input layout is the same as on the 082 integrated amplifier, and the front panel size matches the 151 MK2 Musiccenter.
Pairing
The 035 is designed to drive Burmester power amplifiers such as the 956 MK2 over balanced XLR, and its low output impedance also suits long cable runs to other amplifiers. With a phono module fitted, a turntable connects directly, and the headphone jack serves private listening.
Alternatives
The Burmester 088 is the Top Line preamplifier placed above the 035 in the Burmester range.
