The TAD-M2500TX is a stereo power amplifier made by Technical Audio Devices Laboratories of Japan, announced in March 2025 as the newest component of the Evolution series and designed to drive the Evolution speakers in particular. It replaces an earlier M2500 model, and compared with that version TAD reworked the circuit layout, the power transformers and the machined chassis. Its US retail price is USD 37,995.

Key specs that matter

Rated power is 550 W per channel into 4 ohm at 1 kHz, and rated distortion is below 0.05 percent at half that power, 275 W into 4 ohm. Frequency response extends from 10 Hz to 50 kHz at +0/-3 dB, signal to noise reaches at least 112 dB and voltage gain is 29.5 dB. The balanced XLR input is rated at 1.5 V and 100 kohm, the unbalanced RCA input at 0.75 V and 50 kohm. The amplifier draws 250 W in use and 0.5 W on standby, and versions exist for 120 V at 60 Hz and 220-230 V at 50/60 Hz. It measures 440 x 170 x 467 mm and weighs 42 kg.

Engineering and use context

TAD builds every channel as a bridge-tied load circuit, with two physically and electrically separate amplifiers working in a balanced configuration so that positive and negative halves of the signal stay symmetrical through the chain. The output stage runs in Class D using lead-free power MOSFETs with very low on-resistance, which keeps conversion losses and heat output low, so the design needs no conventional heatsinks. Supply comes from two toroidal transformers rated at 1 kVA each, whose core cross-section changed from square in the earlier model to circular here, with windings wound in parallel to limit the effect of load changes, backed by 33,000 uF electrolytic capacitors. The enclosure is cut from one solid 90 kg block of aluminium without joints, which keeps the ground potential stable and the structure rigid. It stands on three feet with inverted spikes inside them to isolate the amplifier from external vibration. The speaker terminals are oxygen-free copper with a non-magnetic coating, of the heavy type used on TAD's Reference series power amplifiers.

Pairing

TAD offers a bi-amping option for speakers with separate tweeter and woofer terminals, which removes interaction between the drive units. A source or preamplifier with balanced outputs matches the higher-voltage XLR input, and the modest gain suits preamplifiers with generous output level.

Alternatives

The TAD-M700S is the Reference series stereo power amplifier rated at 700 W into 4 ohm and 350 W into 8 ohm.
