The Passion A650 is a stereo power amplifier from YBA's Passion range, with bridged operation into a single channel as an option. It is housed in a natural aluminium case with a large linear power supply, and it accepts both RCA and XLR inputs, including a dedicated XLR input for mono operation.

Key specs that matter

In stereo, the A650 delivers 200 W per channel into 8 ohms and 400 W into 4 ohms, and in bridged mono it provides 600 W into 8 ohms. YBA does not specify the output stage class. For inputs there is an RCA stereo pair, an XLR stereo pair and a separate XLR socket for mono use. The linear power supply uses a 1,000 VA transformer with a UI core. Frequency response is 20 Hz to 20 kHz at -0.5 dB, THD plus noise is below 0.1% and signal to noise ratio exceeds 95 dB. In natural aluminium, the case is 430 mm wide, 397 mm deep and 178 mm high, with a weight of 25 kg.

Engineering and use context

Output doubles when the load halves, which requires the supply to deliver twice the current, and the large transformer is sized for that. Its UI core is built from U- and I-shaped laminations. The separate XLR mono input lets the amplifier be switched to bridged mode for a single loudspeaker, so two A650 units can become a pair of monoblocks. Having both RCA and XLR stereo inputs allows the A650 to work with balanced and unbalanced preamplifiers. On paper, its power, inputs, transformer and measured figures match those of YBA's Signature Stereo Power Amplifier, while the Passion A650 is 17.5 kg lighter. Physically, the A650 is 8 mm taller and 7 mm deeper than the Signature Stereo. Its bridged rating is one and a half times the output each channel gives into the lower load in stereo. Because the mono input is a separate socket, switching to bridged use does not need an adapter cable.

Pairing

The amplifier pairs with a YBA preamplifier, or directly to a DAC with variable outputs such as the Heritage D100, over XLR or RCA. With its high power into low loads, it drives low-impedance floorstanders, and two units in bridged mono suit demanding loudspeakers. The heavy chassis requires a sturdy shelf with space for ventilation.

The YBA Genesis A6 is a smaller stereo power amplifier from YBA, rated at 150 W into 8 ohms and 250 W into 4 ohms, with a 500 VA transformer and a 21 kg case.
